Gulp Maggots for panfish?

Wow, that's strange. I've been using the pink Gulp maggots during the winter for a few years now and have had great success with them. The nice thing is you can fish all night with the same one. I've used the white Alive maggots also but the pink Gulp always seems to be the best for me.

I have had luck with them. The Alive works better for me. One thing I do is drop about 20 of them to the bottom and let that scent stay in the area. It seems to keep the fish in the area longer. Ill do this about every 1/2 hour or so.

I do this technique with Berkley Crappie Nibbles. Works fairly well, but once in awhile you'll see perch eatting them off the bottom and passing by the baited hook.

have you tried them side by side with the real thing? Ive done it a few times and switched back and forth and every time it was like night and day.

I've been using Gulp Alive maggots (white or chart.) or better yet Gulp Alive minnow heads almost exclusively for about 3 years now. I now use the Gulp minnow heads 9 to 1 to gulp maggots, and hardly ever real bait anymore. They work great for me. The smelt (black and white) work better than white, and lots better than red for me.

I have tried real minnows right next to the gulp minnow heads, and the gulp heads work better (crappies and sunnies). Real minnow head to gulp minnow head is about even. Only time real has worked better for me was when the crappies were hitting only LARGE full minnows, but they were attacking them!

I still will sometimes use real waxies, but I think honestly you need to compare how we are using them. If you jig like the fish want them, either baits will work, but if you let it sit there, or jig too much when the fish don't want it moving, then either are just as bad/good.

But I love Gulp Alive minnow heads, my best and main winter biat for panfish. Good luck! (I gotta go get some this weekend, I am OUT!)

They are horrible in cold weather because they get hard and then ends up stuck on your hook. I tossed mine out a long time ago. Plastics are the way to go!

I do like plastics too smile

But really, if you simply take them off your jig when you are done fishing they won't get hard, at least not on your jig wink And they don't get hard when they are in the water.

Not trying to be a Gulp salesman here, just that it is so convenient to have a couple bottles in your bib pocket instead of a splashing freezing minnow bucket. Waxies on the other hand, or real maggots, are easy too... Good luck.

I've never used Gulp waxies before, but Gulp Alive Waxies I have. I'm a big gulp guy and I think for the most part anything gulp should work. It is just how you present it. Here's a pic of the success I've had last year when nothing else seemed to be working. Some of the bro bugs lures tipped with a few of these plastics seems to really work the magic, and what's nice is that because some of them are stuck in 2-3 pieces, sometimes hooking them on like that give killer action. Good luck! They're messy, but definitely worth the investment!

"have you tried them side by side with the real thing? Ive done it a few times and switched back and forth and every time it was like night and day."

I've used the real thing in the past but I don't recall any difference which was better. I may need to try again and pay more attention. I can say I normally use Gulp along side minnows, minnow heads, and various plastics and the Gulp will outfish the others almost 100% of the time - by a factor of 2-5 times. Looks like this may not be the norm but it is what I've experienced.

As far as being stiff when frozen, any bait will be stiff when frozen. Keep it inside with your other supplies when not in use and it'll be gtg when it's time to fish. Just saying.

I say if anyone's willing to buy the Gulp, mind as well spend the extra dollar or two to make it "Alive." From meeting other anglers, it seems the gulp "NOT-Alive" seems to produce better during the summer when the fish are a bit easier to entice. However, I think the juice from the alive can really trigger the fish (especially during ice), and if I'm catching the same number of fish without having to hook on bait every time I'd rather keep my hands as warm as I can.

Also keep in mind that the Alive seems more plastic-like and the non-Alive looks more doughy, so if you want more deadstick presentation both would be fine, but if you're more of a jigger the Alive stuff will probably hold on better and take more of a beating. Just my .02

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
