Muzzy Reports...

Recommended Posts

Very busy weekend. Previous 2 shotgun weekends and first muzzle weekend i was in SE MN zone 347 where deer numbers have been pretty good.

Got to hunt back in SW MN, near avoca-dovray. Saw LOTS of deer. Quite a few horns as well. Sat saturday morn/even, saw many deer, but only smaller ones within shooting range. The majority of the deer wouldn't come out of the neighbors property.

Worked hard on sunday. Real Hard! Dovray sloughs, walked 3+ miles in cattails as tall as I am. Kicked up a lot of nice does, but nice shot opportunities didn't accompany them.

Got sick of walking cattails, so i walked into our CRP patch. Lots of deer movement. Hit a buck from 150yds with the muzzle. Buck dropped and rolled down the hill out of sight. Then proceeded to run away while i was reloading. Lot of blook the first 50yds then sort of plugged up. Drops the next 300yds or so.. Watched the deer walk away into the distance. Tracked right up to the neighbors farm place. 3/4 mile back to my vehilce and boy oh boy were the deer out. Few more bucks int he CRP and lots of big bodied does around...Guess i should have just sat their instead of marching through sloughs all day.

Waited outside the neighbors farmplace till dark (they were hunting the farm). They watched the deer walk through their property. I wanted to continue to track the deer into their cattails, but they didn't think it was worth it - to save neighbor relations, i left it. Unfortunate, I don' tlike losing deer. To quote the neighbors "It didn't look like it was hit too bad, it'll live to die another day".

Couple more days. Gotta decide if i want to head back to SE or SW Mn to finish the season.

Same here Hockey, couple friends hunted 240 and saw 0 all weekend, if I had a wild guess I'd say area 240 has the most deer stands in the state lol. Just a quick weird 240 story, got lost a few years ago, found a deer trail, this was in January so I wasn't worried about hunters etc. and trespass had to take a backseat to surviving, on that 1 deer trail 11 stands had shooting lanes cut to that 1 trail lol. The trail took me to the road thank god as light was waning. Area 240 is high pressure, also a lot of deer in it. That's old zone 4 also at it's best, it's changed that zone since it became zone 2 and top muzzy area in the state by a landslide.

Between my brother and I rifle hunting and Muzzy hunting we end up with two mature bucks and 4 mature does, our freezer are definetley full so our muzzy season is now over. Rifle hunting all four deer walked right up to us in our stands, muzzy hunting we had to jump them while doing a walk and stalk, we both got one with the muzzy doing this.

At about 1:30 I see a deer standing in the neighboring property to that of which I'm about to hunt. Get in the stand about 2:00, and sat till dark not seeing a deer or any critters besides a few gray squirrels.

I know, not a very exciting report. frown

Well, after a long hard fall, I finally filled a tag last night, not the big buck I was after, but needed some meat for the freezer and took a nice fat doe. 1st muzzy deer also. Deer were really moving with the colder weather-seen 17 on the evening hunt, not an antler in the bunch tho.

Well...we hunted the last weekend of ML season and never fired a shot. The deer were coming out to the food plots at the last second of light and we were holding out for bucks or nothing. Never saw an antler all weekend. We had a guy shooting out the window of his truck in the dark as we walked to the truck..buddy was less than 75 yards away on the shoulder of the road but couldn't get a plate number as he sped past. Local CO was very proactive on catching him, followed up with us several times and came to the spot of the incident and checked it out as well..good to see them take it seriously..

3 guys I hunt with, we saw 0 muzzy hunting, it never truly got cold enough and no snow so no go. There were some tracks everywhere we hunted, you could see them on the ice where a slight dusting of snow was, but obviously made after hours, most of the deer in my other area are living in the city limits, we see them after dark in town, they are really freaked out, each year they seem to be even more on edge. But hey, a day in a tree beats changing diapers lol smile. Now, lets abort this zone 2 and get that farmland country back to zone 4. I get nine days to see 3 deer now, I used to get 2 days to see 33. I think zone 2 initially started off with a bang because of higher deer numbers, every party was filling the pole, buying extra tags, taking up bow and muzzy as area 240 is a legendary harvest area, I hope 240 is a 1 tag deal next year as the wolves are also present in strong numbers in some of the area. Time to boil the water and clean the smokepole.
