Tag Your Deer ASAP

Recommended Posts

Metal tags were the best!!! I liked the self stick ones too. Don't know why MN went away from that, almost every other state seems to use them. Must have been a cost type of deal?

the 3 states i've deer hunted in have had paper/plastic tags and licenses, i've never seen a metal tag, then again I'm fairly young.

and yes, i'm sure they went away from them because it was cost prohibitive

As far as tagging, it must be validated before moving the deer from the "site of the kill". I find it hard to believe that rolling a deer over to field dress it qualifies as moving it from site of kill, but that is a question for the DNR enforcement. If the DNR is watching you that closely you likely have done something already to attract their attention.

They will give you a citation if the tag was not valadated before moving the deer this includes gutting them,my dad learned the hard way he rolled a buck over and gutted it that was all the movement he did to the deer.He went back to the truck to get a rope and store some gear and the warden pulled up noticed the blood on his hands and asked him where the deer was. So he walked him back to the buck and asked where his tag was and my dad pulled it out of his wallet unvalidated all he had done was gut it, Long story short he lost the buck to the warden had to pay restitution for the deer and pay $500 to get his bow back.

When you track and recover your deer validate the tag immediately. It is clearly stated on page 70 in the laws nothing to argue about, before your put it on the wheeler or before you put it in the truck attach the tag. If you have a deer without a tag on your wheeler or in your truck they will take your vehicle and the weapon used since they were used in a game violation.

Ok, situation is like this; a buddy of mine hunts in our party. Hypothetically, he shoots a deer, field dresses, validates and then tags it. A few of us show up to help drag the deer out of woods and to trail. So, he has a car and can't load his deer into it but rather we load it into back of a pick up. We pull out but we are a bit of a ways behind him, and C.O. stops us while on way back.... hasn't happened but I'm sure a phone call (assuming there is service) could iron that one out. right?

In the past we have made sure the car was following the truck. wink

1983 metal tag with a ball on the end which wouldn't fit nice in your wallet the flat metal were better. I am not tagging if I get a deer until it's out, the CO in my area hated the site tag law as he was fielding more ? about lost tags and how to get a replacement, he told me even in the site tag days where you hunt and where you have to drag one out of that rathole you'd never get it out or rarely without severely damaging the tag. Validate the license/tag before you move the deer by machine.

Thanks for the clarification.

Possibly leaving a gutted deer and heading back to the vehicle created a possibility in the CO's mind that your Dad was going to leave the area to get another person's tag. In no way am I implying your Dad would do this, but more than one archer has done this in the past. May have influenced how the CO judged the situation vs watching a guy gut a deer, and then he or a legal party hunting companion tags it before anyone (hunter or deer) leaves the site of the kill.

However, your point is well taken and it is better to be a step back from the line, so less chance of misunderstanding.

Being old enough to have used metal tags, I heard that they were dropped in part because it was becoming know how to undo and reuse them. They were locking tags. Also had to be careful how you folded them in your pocket, as it was possible to have it lock by accident. If that happened your tag was "used" and you could not get a replacement. End of season unless someone else with an "open" tag would hunt with you.

The metal tags stopped when the electronic licease era started. Back in the metal tag days, the person whom sold the licease had to physically write your name, address, etc on the licease. They then matched up the tag serial number to the licease serial number.

Remember the "good 'ol days" with metal tags and you couldn't get a license if the store was sold out of metal tags/licenses or if you lost your tag/lic you had to go to the County Auditor to pick up a replacement license...

If you couldn't find it the night before season you were out of luck until the Courthouse opened on Monday (or if the local CO had some left). We have it good now, it took me about a minute or less to get my license today, never would have happened 20 years ago.
