Dragging out Bear

What is the best way to get the beast out of the woods? I usually just throw the deer on the wheeler and haul it out. But what about bears? Any good ideas for one who hunts alone?

If you can get it on a ATV that's great. they seem to flop around more then deer, so bring rope and bungies. otherwise a small trailer or a ranger will work great(sides keep the bear from rolling out). or if it is in a swamp use a cart of sorts or a tarp and a log to carry it out that way you are not doing any damage to the fur or future rug. or worse case 1/4 the animal out.

Same way as a deer or a utility cart for the wheeler, if you are dragging them pull them head first otherwise you will mess up the hide.

An Otter sled or something along that line works great. Put the sled on it's side, roll the bear in and upright the sled. The hide is protected and you are sliding right over all of the roots, logs and such. Trying to drag a bear otherwise is like pulling a big glob of jello around.

Agreed sled works great if its big enough, bring a ratchet strap and use that to keep it on sled.

otter sled, if not Ive rolled them up in a blue tarp like a brurrito an tie off the end an pull blue tarp slides nice.

The best way that I have seen so far is a roll up sled. The one I use it actually a military litter and the piece of plastic wraps around the bear and is smooth on both sides with handles that two guys or one can grab on to and pull or us an atv. If you can get an atv there the car lugage racks work good and also a mettal basket on the back of my wheeler fits a 330 lbs bear into with some ratchet straps to hold it in place. We tie a ratchet stap as high as we can in a tree and use the atvs wench to pull the bear up. Then we can move the atv and bear in to the basket on the back of the atv. I got an idea. Ratchet strap around a tree. using my 4:1 pulley system I should be able to raise up the bear and load on my wheeler. Thanks for the input!

I forgot to add that you will need to have something to lock the bear in the air as you move or release the tension of the wench to move the atv to load the bear. Its not a perfect system but does the job.

Back wheeler up to bear. Hook wench upto a tree and stand wheeler on end with it. Ratchet strap bear to rack. Use wench to pull wheeler back down onto all 4 wheels. Very easy with no lifting.

Kelly has made a great suggestion.

Using ropes and such can also hurt the hide if one is looking at making a rug or mounting the bear.

I have a magnum Otter sled we use for bear and the great thing it also hauls hunters, stands, big loads of bait and even used it to cross a river when tracking once.

Depends on how big it is, if it is a big bear then I'd be try to make some friends. If not you could just quarter it out.
