opsirc

Question

couple years back I pick up one of the old russian rifle from a store in town. I was able to remove all the grease and oil from the metal parts but the stock is still stain and has a oily feel and smell. tried putting it on the vehicle dash in the hot sun to cook some of it ou, but that seems to take too long, any ideas?

thanks

When I built my FN-FAL, the wood stock I bought for it had some oil/grease stains. I ended up stripping the finish, and giving it a light sanding, then refinishing.

It worked very well. It depends on how deep the grease penetrated into the wood fibers. If you strip, sand, and refinish, you should at least get the smell eliminated.

thanks for the ideas. finally got it clean. the mineral spirits did not work very well, just turn the stock white when it dryed. came up with the idea to hook up my heater/cooker lay the stock over two saw horses about 2 ft up, then lay a peice of sheet rock over it. every few second would take off the rock and wipe oil/grease off. took a while but finally got all the stuff cooked out of it.
