Corals, Kings, Puffballs, Shaggies, Miscellaneous Edibles

Recommended Posts

Came across some shaggy manes on a walk tonight. While the smaller emerging ones taste the best, as with the puffballs above, it is best to let to allow some to open more fully, again in the 4 inch range, to rule out possible poisonous mimics. Those loose/darker scales that you see were my tip off to this being a shaggy, as well as the "black ink" that starts to form on the bottom of the cap.

Has anyone been out lately?? I've been working out of town the last couple weeks and haven't had much of a chance to get out in the woods, but did find a couple hours last weekend in the South Metro. I found a few Chants that were on the old side. I also found my first hedgehogs, which were absolutely delicious, some Old Man of the Woods, Chicken of the Woods, a ton of oysters, and a few scaber-stalked boletes. Fried them all up and my favorite were definitely the hedgehogs. Delicious. I also found my first cluster of the toxic Jack O Lantern mushrooms. It was absolutely amazing how bright orange they were. Hard to miss them. I'm headed up to the Staples-Motley area this weekend and will try to get out for a few hours and see what's around up there. Next weekend I'm heading to the BWCA to scout for my moose hunting trip and will keep my eyes to the ground to see whats out and about up there. Hopefully when I get back the hens will be starting to make an appearance.

As much as I love morels, this summer shrooming sure is a blast! There is such a variety out there!

Wow! I am jealous. Went a little nuts earlier in the year and got bit up so much was waiting for a little break in the bug action. Soooo did ya get any pics of any of those? Even a pic of a jack would be great back here. Really want to find some boletes and hogs.......think i am going to have to go out tonight now. Like you alluded to, what a cool, inexpensive, yummy hobby!

Went out tonight and no oysters, chickens, or hens yet. Got these for Jr.'s show and tell tomorrow, after which they will be lunch. Ok, wont be eating the old puffball, but the kids will have fun squeezing it! I know i did, one time, just a little smile

Most of the chants around here seem to be in the end-stage. During the first week of bear baiting they sure were a nice treat though! Chickens are nice and golden right now too, as well as the giant lobsters. I've found tons of them, and have enjoyed trying them for the first time this year... and second... and third... wink Giant puffballs went nuts around here 2 weeks ago as well. Found 3 big fairy rings with nice prime puffs.

Have yet to find or try the corals or bears head... both on the list!

Ruh-roh, I started something ugly... I can see people pushing other people over stumps to get to the lobsters now... wink I had never tried them until this year, but won't pass on them ever again. They are actually something that eats fungi I believe... Kind of neat as they get huge, but almost always take on the form of the mushroom they "ate". Nothing like finding a lobster the size of a shoe that's shaped like a chant!

OK guys, I have this growing in the back yard. Am I missing a gourmet experience or am I lucky to be alive.....

I know nothing about foraging fungi

I have never seen anything like this. What is it? Edible (probably over the hill but might be back next year...)

Del, I am far from an expert, cant see the underside close up, and would have to say that thing probably won't kill you but might give you some indigestion or possibly some time in the bathroom smile I am only speaking for myself in that there are a few types of edibles out there that are pretty safe to eat which you can easily rule out possible mimics that can cause problems. The rest I have no clue as far as what they are, this would be one of them wink

Jameson, have been out a few times to the spots where i found hens last year, and nothing so far.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
