Big Green Egg

Recommended Posts

Recently had some of the best pulled Pork I have ever tasted. It was cooked/smoked in a big Green Egg grill. Does anyone on here have one of these. I have begun researching them, planning to buy one.

This was not the first time I have eaten meat cooked in one of these. Each time the meat was unreal.

Thanks

I received a BGE XL for Father's Day and have used it already for the following:

Jalapeno Poppers

whole chickens

chicken parts

bacon

sausage

burgers

steak

brisket

ribs

and a few others that aren't coming to me right now. AWESOME! Easy to use!

I think when you compare them to some of the 'new' age smokers like they have in the "C" Store, for a grand and a half (and look pretty nice btw), I think the BGE is pretty economical, in those terms. Ceramic will last a life time, steel will eventually fade. BGE's are bomb proof. I don't own one, but have often asked the same question as you. I am at the age where I just want to buy it once, regardless of the cost. Bottom line, I have never heard any digs on the BGE.

Thanks for the great info guys. I will have to watch for more Thirdeye posts. I am trying to decide if I will wait for the Fall Eggfest and get a discounted Egg or Drop an extra $150 so I can get started! my stomach says get started!

thirdeye and his Thanksgiving

If you go to search and then to advanced search and do a DISPLAY NAME SEARCH and put in thirdeye and for your parameters put Newer Than 3 years and Older than 1 day you will get over 5 pages of post. I never knew about BGE till thirdeye started posting about his and what it can do. I do hope to have one someday myself.

They are pretty easy to operate for high temp grilling and baking (pizza), as well as long slow barbecuing.... and the thing I like most is that they are a 4 season cooker.... I barbecue all winter long on mine. The coldest all night cook was minus 25°. Once the Egg gets hot, the ceramic holds that heat and it runs just like it was July 4th.

Going to an Eggfest is a good idea, and you can save some money. I've cooked at 2 of them and they are a blast. On the other hand, the sooner you pull the trigger the better. heheheee.

Speaking of the "Big Green Egg" I can't see why they are so expensive. Any ideas?

That subject has been discussed for years, and I think it's mostly transportation & packaging costs, and some additional costs are built in to offset the lifetime warranty when parts get replaced. I'll bet the base cost at the factory is shockingly low, it just takes money to get them to the consumer.

Eggs are heavy and have fragile components. They are made at a factory in Mexico, then they must be boxed up and sent to distributors, then shipped to dealers. Here is a small Egg (the 13" diameter one) in it's packaging. I have removed the pallet it was banded to.

How easy are the BGE's to move around? Is it on wheels? Would it be feasible to store in the garage and then move it out to the cement apron to cook on??

I like the idea of year around cooking, I usually don't grill in the winter, its no fun sitting in the cold, watching your grill - but if you could just start it, throw something on, and then come back two hours later....

Yes you can buy a "nest" that is on wheels, I have the regular one. They have a fancier one with a handle built into the dome spring mount. It looks like it would be handier for moving. You could also get casters that are wider or with soft rubber too.

Winter cooking is no big deal at all, and actually I peek at the thermometer through my backdoor, but they stay rock solid... so on long cooks I don't make any adjustments for hours. You can also get a forced draft fan attachment that makes all night cooks a breeze.
