If muskies and pike can cross breed, and saugers and walleye can cross breed, lake trout and brook trout can crossbreed, striped bass and white bass can cross bread, and countless species of sunfish can cross breed, then I'm not sure why a channel and flathead couldn't crossbreed. Interested to see the pics.

channel cat for sure. channels in particular have quite a lot of variation in their head shapes, a look through the photo gallery on here will turn up some pretty alien-looking specimens smile

I've never seen or heard of an official account of a cross between the two. Not saying it couldn't happen, but just never heard of it.

That's a channel all the way. The two biggest characteristics that differ are the forked/flat tail and the overbite/underbite jaw.

Put me down for a vote for "extremely unlikely" that a flat/channel could be created. They are surprisingly distant, genetically. The only hybrids I know of (viable or not) that aren't in the same genus are snakes within the family pythonidae, and tbh they're fairly ancient anyways, genetically, which may account for successful hybridization between seemingly distant species.

I hear Mille Lacs is having a crazy blue cat run right now ... If that's too far north Excelsior Bay on Tonka is teeming with trophy Wels eager to take an angleworm under a float. Good luck!

nsnutter, I read your report and drove up to mille lacs today. I didn't have any luck. What are they using for bait? I might try Minnetonka tomorrow and try to get into some Wels. I hear they are an exciting part of neat-ure.

Hey - just got back from fishing as well ... The blues on Mille Lacs are going bonkers for Chartreuse buzzbaits on the surface ... if artificials aren't your thing, try using waxworms on a floating jighead. Sorry you didn't hve any luck - I should've specified bait presentation. Waxies on the surface is an old Norwegian trick used for generations to lure in the elusive Norse Blue Cats. Let me know if you want to try Tonka tomorrow ... I can hook you into some slobs. The Wels there are practically jumping into the boat ... Good luck!

Interesting! I generally keep the lettuce amidst the rest of the Krabby Patty goodness - I fell the green adds a little visual stimulus ... I'll keep that in mind next time I'm fishing for GIANT WELS CATFISH ON LAKE MINNETONKA! smile
