Question about Duluth area

Right now we live just west of Duluth in Carlton. Because we have no ties to this area we want to move closer to the Two Harbors area because that is Lisa's hometown. Carlton gets a lot of cool weather due to the St. Louis river valley and the strong east wind that comes off Lake Superior. Even though the thought of free air conditioning might sound good at first it dose get old. 20 miles away will have sun and 82 and we will be fogged in and 60. Makes it a little tough to grow a garden. If you live north of Duluth you are also closer to some of the better fishing lakes winkgrin

The East side of Duluth is more attractive than the west side for several reasons. A simple drive thru each neighborhood and the differences will be pretty obvious. Are you looking at buying or renting?

If you are open to living outside Duluth city limits, I'd recommend a suburb up ontop of the hill, like the Hermantown/Pike Lake area. You get all the benefits Duluth has to offer, but you are a ways up off the lake and the town is a little smaller and you don't get as much of that big city feel [kind of laughing at calling Duluth a big city, but you know what I mean]... Downtown would be only a couple minute drive away and you are closer to inland lakes such as Island, Fish, Pike, Boulder, Rice, etc. The STL River + big lake are the obvious best fisheries in the area, but still are only a few minutes away if you live ontop of the hill.

If you are more of a country person who likes the peace and quiet of living in the woods, I'd recommend getting a place in Freedenberg township somewhere. Still would only be 10-15 minutes from downtown Duluth and you will have the ability to enjoy the peace and quiet of the woods, most likely be within 10 minutes of a boat launch and have snowmobile trails within a couple miles of your place.

I would look at Hermantown too. Borders Duluth, but away from the busier city. If you live on the hill/lake it will be cooler during the summer and a little warmer at times in the winter because of the lake. I would think about this seriously because as mentioned earlier it can be 90 degrees on top the hill and in the 50's on the hill/lake. I am from southern Minnesota and I miss the warm days in the summer even though I'm on top of the hill where it is warmer. So basically the further away from the hill/lake you get the more warm and stable summers you have. As far as outdoor recreation some of the more popular inland lakes are near to and north of Duluth, but there are lakes everywhere I mean it is Minnesota grin . Also if you are an archery guy you might want to consider a lot with some acreage to hunt on as both Duluth and Hermantown have city deer hunts, unless of course you want to live in the country. Good luck and don't be afraid of renting for a while too as this will give you a feel for the area.

There are some good genes in those Hermantown deer... I have seen several wall mounters that nearly ended up as hood ornaments

There are some very nice areas east, west and up on the hill. Your 1st plan should be what type house you want and get a realtor to show you some in different parts of Duluth. I would stay out of the West End, Central Hillside areas though. Parts of West Duluth are also turning into the new Central Hillside. Spots and new houses below the zoo are nice and not so city like. Woodland, Piedmont, Hermantown are nice.

You can always come across the river and live in gods country with me. grin Superior has some very nice houses and areas as well.

Oh and many bars and liquor stores. wink

If you get way-west in Duluth I thought it was pretty good, Gary/New Duluth/Fond Du Lac - that area. I lived in the Fond Du Lac neighborhood for a few years. There were an occasional grouse/deer in my yard. For fishing I mostly hit the River and Lake Superior, went south for grouse hunting. It seemed to be nice and quiet down there. I liked the cool breeze in the summer when the wind was right.

However, I believed that the city government in Duluth was pretty dysfunctional. Never ending squabbles about stupid stuff. I think the aquarium stuff has been going on for ten years now. I lived on a flat dead-end street with about 12 houses on it. Every light dusting of snow we got would bring out the salt truck, it was nuts. Has the no new liquor license policy been changed yet?

There are some nice small towns around there. Wrenshall, Carlton. and Esko are a few that come to mind.
