Dairy Products for Bear

Seeing Boars post about cream cheese got me thinking....Do bears like dairy products? Such as cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, chip dip, etc....

My dad used to use 5 gal buckets of milk, he said they would sit down and slup it up trying not to spill a drop.

I would worry about spoiling dairy would go bad fast and get sour and nasty.

I too would worry about spoilage, keep it fresh, if you were in a area with a high density of bear, probablyly wont last long on the toungs of bear. Cottage cheese is alredy kinda spoiled. if you can get your hands on that stuff cheap or free, then i would use it only at the begining of consistantly getting hit, change in bait can spook but it might be worth a try early on before a routine evolves. boar

ok thanks. during school i worked in the dairy dept. of the local grocery store and picked up a few things. I put it all in a big chest freezer so I hope it lasts til fall

I have used a lot of baits and most things that can get nasty do get nasty and if it doesn't get gobbled up it lays around and you gota work around it filling your site and if you toss it in the weeds you gota smell it if the coons don't eat it up. For example I tried fish guts once very nasty, and meat some bear like it others wont touch it and it gets green and nasty.

I have a rule that if I wouldn't eat it it does not go on the bear bait. That goes for stuff sitting for a day or two. Milk products in the heat sounds like a stinky mess.

I agree with John, if your wouldn't eat it don't use it as bait.

I certainly agree with that, wen it come to these hard time if a guy can stretch bait an utilize something hes has I say go for it, being that its dairy product with a small window of usage, adding it to the staple bait as a treat or suppliment whith bear that are coming in so its consumed right away, I dont see anything wrong with trying, dont know about the chip dip thu, cheese, throw it in, lots a cheese on pizza an other things that get tossed in. I just had the hardest time not sampling some fudge frosting i put in a bucket. Boar

I used to have access to out of date milk and would freeze it until I needed it for baiting. I would fill pails with a few gallons and let them sit in the sun to go sour then put it at the baits. It was so rancid smelling I could hardly stand it, but the bears loved it. I gave up on using it because I gained access to more cooking oil than I can possibly use.

Got somewhere in the neighborhood of 2500 gallons of cooking oil, I should have a few around to get pictures of. You'll get up here someday, they will just be bigger then.
