Do Woodchucks Chuck Wood?

I live in St. cloud not real close to water. Trees are dead. Wide range of critters on the property. Any guesses?

Looks like some critter was after some insects in the soft rotting wood - my guess would be a woodpecker, or possibly even a skunk or racoon.

You have any bears around there? I've seen them tear up downed trees before looking for insects and grubs. Any claw marks?

My thought was insects as well, and took notice because have never noticed such big shards before. Not a whole lot of coons around, plenty of skunks, recently have seen more possum and weasels. Every five years or so a young bear will wander into the surrounding area, will have to look closer at the tree. Didn't think woodchuck, but also really like that commercial!

I'd almost lean towards a bear also. Even though the tree is dead and rotted, it's tough to see any teeth marks from a rodent i.e. beaver, woodchuck, porcupine.

Check the surrounding area for scat and you might have your answer.

That's more wood than a woodchuck would chuck even if a woodchuck could chuck wood, so I would look elsewhere for your answer.

Rabbits and other bigger rodents have to chew to keep their teeth from over growing, we always put a chunk of wood in our pens with the big rabbits, also they will chew up anything salty.
