2000 Silverado won't start!

Recommended Posts

Good thing I can walk or bike to work!

My Silverado won't start as I think the fuel pump went out.

A few years ago my gas gauge started acting goofy and I was told that the fule pump was the cause for the gas gauge showing full then showing empty in the same minute.

Also, when trying to start the engine it would take turning the key two times before it would fire up, also indicating the fuel pump not working correctly.

Anybody ever have the same situation? confused

Sounds like the "normal" fuel pump and fuel pump regulator issue on GM trucks around that time. I had 4 fuel pumps put in my 97 Tahoe. Only paid for the first one that went out at the dealer the rest were life time warranty. Dont run the gas past 1/4 full. It will burn out as the gas cools the fuel pump. Thats my guess anyway.

fuel filter first then fuel pump could also intake manifold gaskets or plugged catylic converter.

I've never had a new fuel filter solve a no start symptom.

If it where the intake manifold there would have been other signs. Check engine light and rough idle would have been the two common symptoms associated with this.

Plugged cats would have caused a noticeable lack of performance and possibly cylinder misfires

air i had one with a plugged filter not start it looked like original equip. my burb give me fits this past winter put a new fuel pump in it run decent for a day then started running ruff again showed o2 sensor code put new ones on still the same but it would start ,run like a can a rocks though cleaned all the fuel injectors same ,finally sprayed some carb cleaner around and bingo manifold gasket was suckin so much air it would screw fuel pressure up ,cancel out the o2 sensors replaced that and now runs like a champ the next thing my guy thought was the converter he said he had 2 chevys that wouldnt run because of it after seeing the price i was really happy that wasnt the prob, although this other stuff cost around 1200.00 oh well still cheaper than makin huge new truck payments just call it the chevy blues fix it and move on!

The cost is 969.00 to replace the fuel pump! It will be done this afternnon.

Oh well now I won't have to hit the trip oddometer to tell how much gas I have

in the tank! And it will start right away!

I'll have to sign over my paycheck so I can drive to my cabin tomorrow! sick

With the dealer I went to (GMC)my replacement had lifetime warranty(except the tow). They had to replace mine 3 more times after I paid for the first replacement. They were not happy when I pulled in with a full tank of gas on of the times. So if you plan on keeping the truck you made the right decision. When it goes out again in 7 months it will be "free".

I have had this issue with my gauge (2000 GMC Sierra) and assumed it was the Fuel pump as well. $900+ ouch. I know they need to either drop the gas tank or take the bed off to replace the stupid thing.

If you think you know of the cheapest place to have this done at, shoot me an email at my screen name @gmail.com

Ha, I woulda done it for half that wink

Really? What kind of warranty on the pump? the Delphi or oem pump alone would cost close to $300. Might have to start sending some work your way if your doing the labor that cheap.

I was just giving a comparison to actuall business's in which case I highly doubt any shop would do it for much under $6oo. I get you have less overhead doing it on the side so that saves some cost and may be the way to go for some things.

Do you drop the tank or lift the bed? How difficult is this for someone to do in a garage theirself with air tools?

I drop the tank, if the tank is empty, its rather easy. If the tank is full, save yourself stress and siphon the gas out.

Remove rear driveshaft, remove fill hoses for the tank, put a jack under tank, remove strap bolts, disconnect the fuel lines and electrical connector, and lower it to the ground. Blow all dirt away from the fuel pump ring, and remove ring and replace the pump. You may have to replace the electrical connector, as they have updated it for some years. I would also replace the fuel filter at this time.
