I wonder how many DUI's will be issued as a result of a plug left in the boat? whistle

Not saying that's a bad thing, but kind of like a tail light burnt out thing if you know what I mean.

same thoughts!

I know they were still were giving warnings earlier this year for drain-plug violations when the Lilly-Dale landing opened on the Mississippi. I have always pulled my plug so it's 2nd nature for me but apparently from my observations it's not for a lot of boaters.

Plus, how sure are we that Zebras are a horrible thing for a lake? Especially a lake with a Milfoil problem?

hard to predict how they'll affect any given lake, but the large negatives are zebra mussels filtering out all the plankton, which would otherwise be eaten by small fish

they kind of knock the base out of the food pyramid, if you will, we're starting to see the negative impact in the Great Lakes in particular. Less plankton for baitfish = less game fish

Also, on a lake with a milfoil issue, improved water clarity would potentially intensify the milfoil, since it could get light for photosynthesis at greater depths

Sounds like we need a sticker now too.

MN Senate Passes new AIS rules!

12.1 Sec. 26. [86B.508] AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES RULES DECAL.

12.2(a) A watercraft owner or operator must obtain and display an aquatic invasive

12.3species rules decal issued by the commissioner on the owner or operator's watercraft prior

12.4to launching on, entering into, or operating on any waters of the state.

12.5(B) The aquatic invasive species rules decal must be attached to the watercraft so as

12.6to be in full view of the operator.

On a side note it appears other hot-topic items were stripped out of the Fish and game bill.

Perhaps the DNR should not allow personal watercraft at all on the waters. The DNR should have several resort type boats with small motors to rent for the day stationed at each lake. This way no boats would leave or enter the lake. This would actually do something about invasive species. Of course they would also have to supply bait and bait holders for a small fee. Short of this.. its a lost war.

so the governor wants to increase the boat regristration surcharge by 5 bucks. will the sticker come with a sticker price as well? why would he be against taking the money from the lottery profits if they are available? good luck.

Out of curiousity, how long can zebra mussels survive out of water?

quite some time, particularly the larvae ("veligers") if they are on carpeted boat runners or other damp spaces

A freaking sticker now? Like the one they are handing out to the dolts who forgot to put their drain plug in last year because of the new plug law?

I'm about one Mountain Dew short of going full-out postal.....

mad

What about on a boat that is stored outside over the winter?

Just to be clear, I'm not against the rules. I don't even own a boat. I'm just genuinely curious.

so they give me a sticker and a miracle occurs and it's free. then i as a taxpayer pay for the sticker anyway. i guess if the stickers are free then does that make us more aware of what we are doing already? if i have to pay extra for the sticker then why would we need a 5 dollar surcharge? guess i'll have to wait to see the details. crazy. good luck.

We're all aware of invasive aquatics. A sticker isn't going to do a dang thing except cost somebody (probably us) money.

Awareness isn't the issue. Compliance is.

Ya know, some enterprising young college age galls may have a real good summer income opportunity here?

I envision Invasive Bikini Boat Wash Teams popping up on many high traffic waters, and doing very well on tips.

OK...I'm on it...franchise applicants file to the right, IBBW Team applicants file to the left....over here...by me.

As a concerned angler, I would like to be a hands on part of the answer...ya see. wink

So where were these concerned pillers of evnviornmental science 20 years ago when we had a chance of slowing them down?

Z-mussels, millfoil, mystry snails, spiney water fleas, round gobie were not a phenom unknown to the DNR, the EPA, and other agency's charged with protecting out waters so again where were they?

And now that the herd is out of the barn they want to start fining us.

These agency's are the only ones authorized to to any thing and they sat on there hands and are still sitting on their hand as far as the great lakes are concerned.

I think that maybe responsible outdoorsmen in an already established credible organiztion should consider a class action suit against the state that allowed this to happen,.

We pay taxes to these agency's to do this sort of protection work but they would rather fight battles like the clam near the new still water brigde that may get displaced.

Hope you feel you got your moneys worth because the fines will not pay for what is needed to fight this, it will only pay for the weed nazi's at the landings.

Sorry for the rant but this is really upsetting.

I think they may be over capacity, and I'd sure hate to see them get a ticket...

Way over my capacity, I know that... grin

Wonder if any of those long-lived invasive larvae can get a lift on a duck's foot?
