Shed Trip 2011

Recommended Posts

Congrats - sounds like a great trip to me! That's amazing. I get excited when I find one antler. I've found 1 shed in 15 hours of walking this year. Last year it was 2 sheds in 12 hours. .11 sheds/hour - is that bad? smile

Thanks guys. All ill say for location is "up north". Sticknstring I hear ya on the lack of sheds. If it wasnt for this trip and north dakota I would have only found 5 in Minnesota and thats with 40-45 miles of walking and about the same number of hours.

Just go for sheds. Would be fun to do a bow hunt up there though. We had 7 match sets and only 5 fresh drops out of the 51

When you are counting fresh drops, are you counting them as "fresh" if they are dropped this winter (grown in 2010 season) or "fresh" as in dropped within the past X days/weeks/month.

Many of the sheds in your picture, in fact I would guess most, appear to be dropped from the past season even though they are already bleached. The sun can bleach an antler nearly white in a short period of time.

For example, I picked 8 sheds Saturday and all of them were "fresh" from this winter - but every single one of them was bleached white.

Counting them as fresh from this last winter. Its pretty easy to tell up there. even the fresh ones are still really dark and have the wax ring. Plus they are sitting on top of the moss and grass, not indented into the moss and no grass growing over them. The bases are probably the best way to tell, as most sheds older than a year up there are really discolored, often greenish.
