UNIT
I am looking at buying new rod holders for my boat and wondered what everyone thinks about the tempress Fish on model vs RAM rod holders. I am open to other suggestions but am interested in these two specifically. Any information about rod holders would be great.ThanksUNIT
311Hemi
One word....Folbe!I tried the RAM and returned them. The Folbe design is much better IMO, lift strait up and out...that's it. With the RAM you need to tilt the rod up and pull the butt out.
Brad B
I know it is not one of the ones you asked about but don't over look the driftmaster rod holders. I just put them on my new boat and they look good and are well built. Most of us catfish guys run driftmasters. if these rod holders can handle 30 to 50 lbs catfish then they must be good. hanson
I like and have RAMs on my boat. I definitely prefer them to the "typical" Scotty, Cabela's, Fish-On, etc... rod holders. Easier to get the rod out in my opinion and very adjustable. I believe they are made of the best plastic of the bunch as well as I've never stripped one out or broken one either.I've used Folbes plenty... still undecided. I've had rods hang up in them more than once.Driftmasters just don't provide the flexibility/adjustability I need for the types of fishing I do. While great for catfishing, I can't stick rods up in the air (planer boards) or bury them in the water (muskie trolling).I've never been in a pro walleye boat with Driftmasters but I'd say 60-70% of them have RAM. jellio
Probably not what your looking for but I made these up for $1.64 worth of PVC they work slick and are fully adjustable.
Northlander
I have both Rams and Scotties on my boat. They are both good. I prefer the Rams with spinning rods in them and the scotties with linecounters/baitcaster. The rams seem to work better with low profile baitcasters. As said driftmasters just dont adjust enough for me. Nice thing about Rams is they have a ton of mounting options and accesories.

Not sure I have had this issue but would be curious to know what you mean.Grab the rod on each side of the holder and lift strait up......can't get much easier than that. And they are built tough. tacklejunkie
I use those Northeasterns(I think that's the name). They're tough and all I have to do is lift the rod straight up. They're also tough for big, hard pulling dipseys

DTro
Rods hang up.....what do you mean exactly? Not sure I have had this issue but would be curious to know what you mean. Grab the rod on each side of the holder and lift strait up......can't get much easier than that. And they are built tough. I've tried the Folbes a couple of times, and there is no doubt a learning curve to get them to open up effortlessly while there is a fish fighting on the other end....well at least a fish that couldn't be considered bait. I'm not a fan of the Folbes Find a rod holder that will fit the style of fishing you mostly do. I like Driftmasters because with mostly bottom fishing, I don't need infinite angles and I want something that is tough as nails and will accomodate a large butted rod, plus the last thing I want to do is futz with moving parts when a 50lb fish is tugging on the business end. If you troll a lot for Walleyes and Esox, you might consider something other than Driftmasters and go with the Ram like suggested.

fishwater
I've used Folbes plenty... still undecided. I've had rods hang up in them more than once. I have Folbes on my boat, and they do tend to stick, especially when newer. My 4 original ones are now easy to pop open, the extra ones I picked up last year are very sticky in comparison. PerchJerker
I've got Tempress Fish-Ons on my boat and have used them on my boats for about 12 years. I think they're great. I like the RAMS too, but I've never had a problem or complaint with the Fish-Ons so I've never wanted to change.
MuskieJunkie
The RAMS are great but for the money you can't beat the cabelas brand scotty rod holders. I just saw them in their add for $12 each. Personally I'd rather have 6 of those on my boat (that is what I have) for the same money as 2 of the RAMS. However I do not like the quickdraw styles they have have.
