Shoot a limb hanger!!!

One more week for me - uncle is hearing birds but everyone and their brother hunts the area, we'll see. My dad is heading down tomorrow as he didn't get or buy a tag and thus will be my official scout.

My honey hole has a big bird on it and my bud and his two boys are gonna hunt that - the young guns get first crack at that bird.

Need to check and see if anyone is hunting behind the house next week or not and if its a green light need to get out and see if the birds have moved into the area yet.

Weather forecast is decent thus far for next week anyways. I got approved at work today for half of Wed and Fri off and all Thurs.

Well I didn't get out yesterday due to unexpected set of circumstances..I applied for a job back in December...the job I've been trying to get since getting out of the Army, anyways after 6 hours of interviews in the month feb...I didn't get it...well yesterday morning, I got called back in, and was offered the position. woohoo...now turkey season...I went out at 445am this morning...had 2 jakes come in around 8am..stopped at 50 yards and turned away. Around 1pm, I gave out a yelp, and got one back..this went on for about 20 mins..yes the thought crossed my mind that i and another hunter were playing games with each other....nope about 60 yards away out steps a hen, followed by what I think is one of the biggest toms I've ever seen..they both start my way getting to about 40 yards, turn back into the woods and disappearing. Well 445am until 645pm and I'm spent. My first day ever hunting turkeys...this is one tough critter!! back at it tomorrow.

I was thinking the same thing - only DonBo would miss a shot like that!

With the chokes these days, 60 yds is easily achieveable.

Geez, and here I thought only Archery sniper would give me grief about somthing like that..... grin

FYI, I believe Abndoc is bowhunting, thus the 40 yards is a bit too far.

You've redeemed yourself this year! It's just too darn fun reliving the past and all those darn misses! laugh

You're right, 'doc mentioned he had the bow packed - good for him! Hopefully he can connect. I've had more birds than I can count stay out 40-50 yds when bowhunting. This year I feel pretty confident at taking a long poke. You don't have to worry about a turk ducking your string, that is if you can ever get one to stop moving!

Don't be too quick to let me off, you may remember a miss in Kansas from only 15 yards. blush Not that I realy needed to remind anyone. shockedcrazy

Well another morning down...its almost hot now..ah the weather. First light...gobble gobble...then nothing..around 8 i see a hen coming at me, followed by another, and the big boy behind her. Same thing, turned into the woods..bye bye. He was on those hens watching every move they made. I waited until noon..moved the blind down between where they are entering and exiting. pushed it back in the woods about 10 yards. other then that...not much action. Talked with a few guys at the gas station this morning, everyone says the same thing. quiet toms. Any tips pulling him away from the hens? taking a nap going back out.

and I thought hunting mature bucks is tough! eek I can now see why its so addicting...trying to figure these birds out.

Yep, sleep in and go out around 9am! Those pesky hens will sneak off and those lonesome toms will remember your calls and come check you out. 9am - noon is a very productive time to kill a turkey. It's a patience game with archery tackle. You have to wait 'em out! Just wait until you arrow one - you'll be more excited than a woman watching the royal wedding! grin

Get aggressive on the calls to get the hens to come to you. Add some Kee kee to the mix and the Tom's might even leave the hens. I have had good luck with Kee kee call pulling the tom's away from hens. If that does not work stay with trying to get the hens to come to you. The gobbler will follow.

Well guys...I spent over 40 hours in the woods since Thursday morning. No bird. Still have a tag in another 2 weeks. Saw lots of birds, but with the wind, rain, and my lack of turkey skills..just not much going on around here. Lots of loner hens, and even group of hens alone. Saw 12 hens tonight...no big boys. I'm pretty much exhausted, going to get some food, sleep, and rest. I will use the knowledge I have gained over the last 4 days to go after them again on the 18th!!

That's the way it goes sometimes doc. Ya can't do anything about the weather. Better luck with your next tag. I go again next week in WS.

I passed on spring turkey, figured i would do both bow deer and turkey at the same time as I saw more bird that deer last season. Figured I could take the shot and leave the bird until I get outta my blind/stand. Anyone else do this?

I've shot a few turkeys while bowhunting deer, but the spring and fall seasons have nothing to do with one another. You don't lose preferance points for the fall hunt by hunting in the spring.

Bought my license finally - heading out tomorrow am for a couple hours. Scouting and landowner reports are not good, but you never know. Might have to rely on my buds kids filling up early at the honey hole so I can get a chance hunting there.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
