tacklejunkie
in the freezer, in a vacuum pac bag, and never thawed. If I keep a roast in the freezer in such a bag, will it be ok if I choose to eat it in the summer?
reinhard1
no problem. properly vacume sealed meat can last up to 2 years in a properly running freezer. even properly wrapped meat in freezer paper it would last a year or more. good luck. mainbutter
After 6 months most meat starts to not quite taste as fresh, but is still very good.At a year or more I can tell that meat is "older", but has never made me sick.I generally make sure to clean out my freezer at least once every year and a half, and that means during that particular month I eat lots of salmon fillets that are getting old enough that I wouldn't trust them much longer. reinhard1
how are you wrapping your fish or meat? as mentioned above you should have no problem with anything. also make sure you date and label everything and rotate your stuff if you have a lot. good luck. leech~~
Ask my wife. She thinks our freezer is a "Kryogenix laboratory" I keep digging things out of there at the bottom that is years old! I told her not to buy one more item of meat until we finish what we have in there! But, my butcher double wraps our venny and it's lasted two seasons. Vaccum pack it the best for long term freezing though.
BobT
I believe the only real problem from keeping meat frozen for too long is the risk of freezer burn, which is nothing more than freeze-drying. It doesn't become dangerous to eat, just very bad tasting. I may be wrong and if I am someone please set me straight.
reinhard1
everything you freeze should be properly freezer wrapped or vacume sealed. fish should not be frozen thawed out and then refroze again. everything you freeze should be fresh when frozen. dont freeze meat or fish thats been laying in the fridge too long. bacteria does build up. during the thawing out proccess that old meat will have bacteria just build up faster. do not store meats in zip loc bags in the fridge unless you are marinading it for use later in the day or the next day. plasic bags sealed brings on condensation thus alowing bacteria to grow quicker. my rule on meat and fish is always use it or freeze it.when you store meats in your freezer. label it and date it. meat is not cheap so take care of it and rotate. i'm fussy with food because i was in the buisness for years and have seen it all. i dont know if you remember a few years back when they had a huge hamburger recall. well our company gave full credit for any ground beef brought back with our label on it. we had people bring in ground beef that some had up to 5 years in their freezer. still gave them credit, but i did give some gentle instruction on proper handling of meat. a sale does you no good if the product is not used. good luck.
