How well do the suction cup transducer mounts work?

I have used the suction cup transducers on a few boats before and have never had a problem. In fact they can be a huge pain to get off at the end of the day.

If oyu have your own boat and want to do more than a temporary mount, just drill teh holes and be done. But these work great in a portable capacity.

Only problem I have experienced is getting them mounted right. Once they are mounted I haven't had any problem. I wasn't trying to run it at 50mph though, more like 20 max.

The getting it mounted right problem had to do with turbulence from a rib under the boat. It would work fine until the boat started moving then it would go crazy. When we figured out the problem and remounted the ducer it was no troubles at all.

I don't have my own boat. Use my father-in-law's boats and he never has a decent finder on any of them. So I made a set up to turn my 'bird into a portable. I only use a suction cup for the transducer. In 5 years it has fallen off once as I was cruising across the lake. Wasn't a big deal as I always tie it to a boat cleat just in case.

I agree with others that getting it in the right place is the tough part. I usually have no problems until I get the boat up around 15 to 20 mph. At that point you typically can't read your screen or depth.

But as far as it ripping off while under power... i never worry about it.

Funny thing happened once though.... My brother and I were trolling one day and he hooked into something "big". After a very long fight from a fish that he was sure was fighting his fish turned out to be a portable finder. Suction cup and all was still attached.

I bought a plastic 5" X 7" X and maybe 1/2" thick mounting thing. I don't want to call it a bracket, but I don't know what to call it and it did have 2 pre-drilled holes. I drilled below the water line and used stainless bolts, washers and lock nuts and some marine grade sealent. Then I used 4 stainless woodscrews to screw in the brackets for the ducer. No leaks and it's solid, maybe too solid. That's ifn' you wanna drill below the water line.

Thanks HEADCHEESE - That's what I have

My nephew had the suction cup and could only use it at slow speed.

I also have the Sully® 8001P Universal Portable Transducer Bracket for my locator. Or at least it looks like the one I have. I have yet to find a boat it didn't work on. I believe I bought it about 6 or 8 years ago at Cabellas.

so I'm maybe having a bit of buyers remorse, but we'll see how it works. I ordered a suction cup mount for my boat. Its a '76 Lund 16' Deep V w/ an '02 Johnson 25hp. I guess I'll see how it works. If I don't like it, I'll spring for the more costly upgrade to the sully. Just not crazy w/ the idea of drilling holes in my boat
