Wish you could rent a tow vehicle

Just returned from the RV show and without a decent tow vehicle you're s.o.l.

If the feds really wanted us to save gas they would encourage car rental businesses to rent trucks with a towing hitch. Makes no $$ sense to buy a gas guzzler to tow and have it sit when not towing, or worse yet, drive it to work every day.

If you could rent one, you could buy a decent camper and only rent the truck when you were needing to tow it. Yes, some of you guys with the big 5th wheels are lucky enough to tow with your company trucks, but for the rest of us, it's a bummer.

It's a good idea but I probably don't fit in this category. I own the gas guzzler (Silverado 1500) but if I had to rent a truck when I needed it for truck purposes I'd be renting a truck about 42 weekends a year. Do people with the fancy travel trailers really only use them like 5 times a year?

Fortunately I work from home and only have to drive into the office once a month so I'm running mostly recreational/personal miles on my truck.

Also I thought one rental car company was advertising renting pickup trucks now. Although the commercial indicated it was for the guy needing to get drywall some weekend not for towing.

I worked for Avis for 10 years. It isn't up to the car rental agencies- it is their insurance companies that have made them rules and don't want to pay out claims to people that tow things wrong and kill people. And to be honest- I don't blame them.

I agree. I'm taking a trip up to voyagers this year and i wanted to rent a truck that was newer than mine and with AC. Nobody does it. There is a need for it.I have a truck already buts old and it would be nice to have the piece of mind to pull the boat for 5 hours. Some of us don't want a new truck payment either.

I think Zamboni has the right answer. Insurance.

Think about having your truck and somebody that you don't know, comes over and asks to rent it? Will you ?

I personally think towing anything above 3000ls should have a training class, then above 10,000 even a better class.

I tow for a living every day, and I am amazed to see what I see on any road.

Having a trailer means probably doubling your vehicle weight or more, it means double the stopping distance, much much longer to turn, height issues also in many cases.

How many times you come up to a bridge and see "12ft max height", do people pay attention to it, many don't.

Many people with large RVs have dedicated trucks that use just for towing it, that's it.

I strongly suggest getting a gas truck, you can use just for towing, cheaper to buy than diesel.

Also did you look into renting a motorhome ? You could sell your RV and keep the funds to rent a class C then tow your boat behind with no problem. There are several places that offer this service around the cities.

This will save you from the expense of a truck you don't need, including insurance, licensing, maintenance, etc.

There are some really nice pop-ups that you can buy and not have to have a large tow vehicle to pull it and they have MOST all of the same amenities as the larger RV's. If you are only planning to use it a few times a year, I would get one of these.

Ever tried to rent a trailer from uhaul, or a truck and trailer. Much harder then renting a car.

Renting from u-haul is easy to do they will let any [PoorWordUsage] drive their trucks I know since I work on all of them and see what kind of things people crash into and stupid things they do.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
