Tip up Storage

Recommended Posts

I screwed a 2x2 across the bottom and top of a 5 gallon pail. It divides the pail into two "compartments" Seems to help them from getting tangled and beat up some.

I drilled holes in the end of my tip ups to insert the hooks into. I put the hooks in the holes and spool the line tight.

The two compartment bucket deal isn't perfect but it seems to help.

As far as securing the hook I use eye screws and screw them into the very end of the tip up opposite the spool! Hook the hook in it and wind up tight. Simple. Just put them all hook down in the bucket.

As for carrying....I need a better method for that also! I think the boxes with a mini a-frame gun rack that will hold 6 look like they work good. Anyone know where to get one or find patterns for one?

How about the Flambeau Tip-Up Carrier?? I have the round one and it works perfect for the Frabill Pro-Thermals.

Get one of those $20 big yellow Plano tool boxes w/ the clear containers on each end of the lid. Take the tray out & store the tip-ups inside and put your tackle in the smaller lid boxes.

I like that Idea it just seems kinda bulky, but it would definitely take care of the problem.

I use a Croxton rod bag. There are three compartments and I put two Beaver Dams in each one. There would probably be room for three in each if you wanted to.

When I wind them up at the end of the day I bend the flag arm all the way over in the opposite direction. Then I stick the hook into the spring its self and bring the flag arm back over and stick the end into one of the holes in the reel. The pinch fit of the spring holds the hooks in place very well.

In a previous thread on this topic, one fella posted a pic of his Otter or similar sled set up with PVC pipes in rows mounted sticking straight up off the bottom of the sled. If memory serves, I believe they were mounted to some sort of wooden frame, and they were just a tad shorter than the tip-up so it's easy to get them out. Probably overkill for a guy with two tip-ups, but if you've got half a dozen or more, pretty slick.

now this may not work as well for a beaver dam, but for storage of my regular polar tip ups, I use those "cause" bracelets. you know you can get those cancer support, military support, etc breacelets. They work really really well. put them over the flag, wind up the entire length of line and just wrap the band around the spool. Hold really well. brocolli bands I've heard work too, but those colored bracelets work like a charm

HT and Gander sell a black fabric tube that is rigid with a zipped cover on one end and has a handle & carrying strap. This works great for my Frabill Classic wood tipups. Holds two tip-ups perfectly. I inserted a piece of cardboard to separate the tipus so they don't bang or tangle with each other. I wish it had a small zipper pouch on it so I had a place to store my tip-up terminal tackle, leaders, etc.

Cheap? You bought beaver dam tipus correct. Protect your investment. Good luck on your search.

That's what I was thinking, the price of this storage bag (which looks real nice and would protect your tip-ups well) is about the cost of ONE of your tipups. They are great tipups and very pricey so take care of them and they should last for a very long time.

I have a green bag I got at GM years ago. I think it was advertised as a rod bag but basically it's about 25% longer than a typical tip up and just a rectangular bag with a main pocket and 2 side pockets. It has velcro in the main pocket I believe to hold rods but I use it to hold my scoops. I can fit 5-6 tip ups in it tightly but this is a combo of wood and plastic tip ups (I think Beaver tip ups are slightly larger all around).

I store them all year with flags down in that bag in my sled. I do remove the hooks at the end of the year though but not the leaders.

At the end of a day I bring the line around the base to the top and hook the hook to the flag pole. Typically there is the additional piece that goes under the shaft to hold the flag down when set up and it has rubber "grommets" of sort so it can be held in place on the flag. I move it to where it makes the line and leader straight so I don't bend the leader and hook the hook to it. Do the same in summer but hook the leader to it.

In any case this has worked and it was cheap, however I've contemplated before the tool box approach also. Keep the tackle in the top tray and the tip ups down below... but so far this works as I keep the tackle in a small portable plan tackle tray in the side pocket of the tip up bag.

I have a zippered tip-up storage tube/bag from Frabil. Hold three easily and you can make 4 fit snuggly.

I own six tip-ups. In Wisconsin you can fish with three and I regularly have my two daughters on the ice with me... I guess I should buy three more so we each have three!

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
