The big names- Genz,Mitchell,Clam team get most of the recognition in the outdoor publications and of course they get$ for promoting Vexilar. The big 3 (vex, marcum, bird) all have excellent units. I love my flasher and my friends have different brands than me and we all seem to like them all the same. Decide for yourself if the hype is worth buying a unit for or see what your friends like and go by their recomendations.

yea i have a vex fl8, its an old one but does the job. my son-in law got a deal for a marcum flasher that is fairly new from a buddy that needs money. $300 unit for $150. i told him to buy it now. i believe most of the flashers if not all named in these threads will do the job. good luck.

First off I can't see how anyone wouldn't want a flasher. IT ALLOWS YOU TO SEE WHERE the fish are at, and how they are reacting to techniques and stuff. In reply to the consumerism, get a flasher take care off it and you won't have to buy one for years. My buddy has one that is around 15-20 years old and he cleaned the brushes out and the screen and it works like brand new. I am at college and the flasher had to stay home with my brother, but trust me I am getting one soon. Hands down the most important piece of ice fishing equipment.

I think our friend Bobby needs to get a paper route or shovel snow / mow lawns to get the evil capitalist flasher.

grin I think you are correct my man. I shoveled and snow blowed enough snow and made enough money already this year to buy me one I know that. My back knows it too.

"thats my real name and ment to say consumerism insted of capitalism"

If it weren't for consumerism you wouldn't have a home, nor clothes, nor food to eat. Without consumers, we don't have a society. It is all a matter what you choose to buy or not. Don't knock me because I do, after all I am keeping someone in a job. Humminbird Ice 55 owner and proud of it.

You can't go wrong with a vex, marcum, or humminbird. You should invest in a flasher, I bought one this year (Humminbird Ice 45) and it's changed my fishing experiences. I've caught so hundreds of fish this year that I simply wouldn't have because they were suspended in the water column. Vexilars are field proven and can withstand years and years of use (some people use 15-20 year vexilars). Marcum and Humminbird's have come out with more features and more competitive prices as a way to compete with Vexilar and their sales (Humminbird has only been making flashers for 3 years, and Marcum for like 6-7 years?? CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG). A lot of people say if your going to spend your money, spend it on a Marcum or HBird because you get more features at less or equal money as a Vex.

i know, but i am not going to. my mom and i was talking about how technology is always changeing and how the usa is a capitalistic country.

You don't need to buy every single ice fishing gizmo out there, just prioritize. Consumerism is a problem when people just buy more and more disposable junk hoping it will make them happy. Tell your parents that this is a durable tool that you'll likely have for the rest of your life (you really don't EVER have to upgrade a flasher if you find the basic one does the job) if you care for it. They can't be opposed to long-lasting durable goods that will pay for themselves over time, can they?

I'm kind of like them....resistant to technology, resistant to buying things just because someone says I need to. But I run it through the test, "Will this last for a very long time and will I get the money's worth of utility from it??" With the Vexilar (or other flasher), if you fish a lot, the answer is probably "yes".

Better yet, if they're anti-consumerism, find a used FL-8 somewhere, pay a discount price, and that should satisfy them. wink

In fact, tell them that if it makes you enjoy your ice time more, you'll be on the ice more, and you won't be out spending money on other products or entertainment.

Go to a local store that sells them all and see what your options are and what the price range is. Your will get many opinions on why which one is better than the others. Make "your" choice.

I personally bought a H-bird Ice 35 because at the time it was in "my" price range and the best unit at that price based upon the opions it has. And I would buy another tomorrow--probably a 45 or 55 just because I can.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
