Costa Del Mar Glasses

Figured I'd ask here since the bass guys are into style and cool glasses and looking good.....

I have a pair of CDM Fathom 400s that's a few years old and have a few nicks in the lenses due to my fault over time.

Costa does offer replacement lenses for normal use/wear/tear, anyone ever sent a pair in for replacement? Curious on the cost, or am I better off just buying a new pair, which I did BTW with 580s, so these would be back-ups.

$11.95 for their handling plus my shipping, but any ballpark on the lenses?

My buddy cracked the lense on his 580s and they charged him $50, but that was one lense...

Thanks for checking with the rep Deitz, I may just keep them as a back up for now, as they're not bad and not the blemishes aren't in my direct line of vision.

I tried a Triple Tail model this time, I got 'em today and really like how they wrap and the hinges really give a great fit.

Great glasses, and great eye protection, performance aside.

Funny you say that, I was just looking at those and wondering how they are. What's behind the like, the side shields? Looks like they are a little bigger overall?

Curious what your thoughts are, Deitz.

+1 on the man o war frames. I got them for xmas with the 580 green mirror glass lens. I have been wearing them without the side shields. I will try them with the shields once the season come around and give them a whirl. I also really like the rubber on the side of the framed and on the nose piece. They are comfy and feel like they wont move.

I have the Frigate which is the same as the Man O War frames but for smaller heads. Love them.

I have the fathoms and have been wearing those for about the last 10 years. The lifetime warranty is nice and they have fixed up scratched lenses for around 50 bucks and actually sent me a brand new pair after seeing wear and tear on one of the old pairs I had. Great glasses to fish with!

I have never owned a high end pair of polarized glasses. Is it worth the money, or can I get by with the 40 or 50 dollar pair I am wearing now?

It is a personal decision if you want to spend the dough on expensive glasses or not. For many years I spent money on the cheap glasses and would go through multiple pairs a summer, frames would break, lenses scratch, screws would drop out ect, oh and you can't forget the ones that you'd drop overboard, sit on, forget. Once I made the decision to go get the spendy glasses I found I saved money by only having one pair, the glasses and frames were higher quality and much more durable and I took better care of them knowing what I paid for them. Back to your question, is it better then the 40-50 dollar glasses you have? Depends on the glasses but I'd say yes, better quality, clarity and durability. I bought a pair of similarly styled Cabelas glasses and it is very interesting to feel the difference between the Costas and the Cabelas glasses. You can, and do notice the difference in quality right away. Jmho.

The Man o war seem to block out more of the side light because of the side pieces. They are a great fit for my head, but maybe not for all.

BassNut33- It really depends on how much extra coin you have. I think you owe it to yourself to have 100% UV protection, but you can also get that in cheap sunglasses. I can tell you this from my own experience. Going from cheap sunglasses, to top o the line is like going from a tube television to High Def.

lastly I will end it with a quote from my fave comedian. Mitch Hedberg. "I bought a seven-dollar pen because I always lose pens and I got sick of not caring."

What Lens color do you giys prefer for sight fishing on bright days? I am in the process of ordering some presciption Costas, and the sales people are steering me towards the gray lens, but I see alot of guys with the green mirror. Any thoughts?

Really depends on how bright the day is.. My fave so far are the silver mirror or the amber

I just bought of a pair of CDM Blackfin 580 with silver mirror lenses this past summer and they are absolutely awesome! I bought them off of e bay brand new for about $60 cheaper then the CDM HSOforum.

If you have some money to burn, they are absolutely worth it. I upgraded from a pair of $19.99 cheapies to some new CDM Harpoons last summer, and I'll never go back. Not only are they a miracle for sight fishing, but they eliminate the glare completely and I completely got rid of the headaches I used to get fishing on a bright day.

FWIW, CDM will not replace single lenses, as somebody upthread mentioned - they only replace them in pairs. At least that's what I was told when I backed over them with my boat trailer and had to replace them
