Yesterday Dennis Steele of Minnesota River Guides caught and released the 49.7 Lb flathead yesterday in a Metro Area of the Minnesota River.

This baby is still swimming and Dennis assures me there are many more 30-60 lb flats swimming in the Minneosta River.

Wow, nice fish.... I guess I will have to forget the lake head on down to the river (if i was not working 12 hr days the weekend).... Has there been an increase in the number of and size of cats over the past few years? Or is it more people are fishing them...

Good Luck, JegerJack

Great fish Dennis!

It takes a skilled angler to land such a fish on light tackle. Makes the catch even sweeter.

A couple of years ago I caught a Flathead in the 25 to 30 lb range on Pool 2 with a jig-n-minnow and 6 lb mono. It was quite the chore to get it in. I can imagine you had your hands full for a while with this one.

Again congratulations on an awesome feat! grin.gif

Thanks for all the congratulations. smile.gif
It was caught on an 1/8th oz JR's rattle jig and a chartruese/sparkle Ring-n-Grub while fishing for walleye on 8lb test power pro.
I follwed the fish around for about 20minutes not being able to turn the fish.I am not sure she even knew whe was hooked! The jig poped out of her mouth as soon as the fish was landed.I was really happy that the hook did not straighten out.I have had a lot of cheaper bulk jigs straigten out on smaller fish than that!
The next day I went out with Jim W and Sarge.Jim caught this 28lber on a jig and leech on 6lb test.Again we had to follow the fish. His fight was probably more difficult with all the "coaching" going on in the boat! smile.gif
