what auger to buy?

Jake1987

Question

I am in the market for a new auger and looking for some advise. Right now I am loking at the SM Strikelite 2 and the Jiffy propane models. I have some concern about the propane and the cold. I did see them at the icefishing show, and they impressed me.

Looking for any insight that you may have.

Thanks

I have a jiffy model 20 8" and love it. I have heard good things about the propane models this year though. From what I hear they have just as much power and no fumes. My buddy just keeps the propane tank in his truck which solves the freezing issues on a cold day.

I've looked at the new jiffy propane models and they do look pretty nice, according to the jiffy rep that was at our gm store one propane tank will last the same as 3/4 a tank of gas. I may be mistaken but that was what he said if my memory is correct. To not have the smell of the fumes would be awesome. Heck if a zamboni can run on propane why can't my auger! All things aside though I have a jiffy model 30 that i was handed down from my dad, the auger is older than me (at least 22) and it starts on the first pull just about everytime, yes it's heavier, and it doesn't cut as fast as a strikemaster, but that dependability will win me over everytime

i would go gas chipper blade, JIFFY! chipper blades last. i would stay away from the propane for a year or two. let other people test em! i wouldn't want to worry about the propane freezing or if i have enough.

if you're worried about the stinky 2 stroke the right oil helps quite a bit.

I guess if I had the choice of buying a new auger I would go Strikemaster.....same as my current auger......I like the idea of propane but the weight of the auger really changed my mind when I checked it out.....sorry traveler I must be a girlie man but I like to think I just like to use my energy on drilling more holes rather than trying to lug the propane auger to the next hole...lol
