Nebraska deer hunting

Recommended Posts

Both the Bow and Muzzelloader are unlimited and available on line. The rifle tags are available to non residents if there are permits left over from the general resident draw. If the residents draw out the unit during the general license draw there will be no permits available for non residents in that specific unit. I hunt the eastern part of the state along the Missouri River.

Well the surplus license #'s are known ahead of time and a date is set for first come first serve for residents wanting a second license or non residents wanting a first license. But since the unit I hunt has a bonus doe tag with the license I don't think many residents buy a second permit. So the non resident can get a rifle tag fairly easily. There was a time not too long ago when all the rifle tags sold out during the resident draw and a non resident tag was impossible to get for rifle anyways.

About the over the counter, I think you can send in an application but deer tags are not available at sporting good stores, small game licenses yes deer and turkey tags no. Most people get one online, I think you can also get one at the game and parks commision In Lincoln.

Talk about ironic.

I went to PHX on business last week. The lady sitting next to me was coming home to PHX from Nebraska.

Super long story short, her Dad farms 1700 acres and its amongst the Missouri river bottoms.

She gave me his contact info and told me to call him up. He wants deer removed. No fees, nothing. Just call him up and he is more than happy to let people hunt. None of the family hunts at all for deer.

Talk about lucky! Looking forward to some future conversations. laugh

Might have to auction spots off. laugh

Email sent to Nebraska DNR with questions. Once I get educated on the hunt structure and licenses, I am going to make verbal contact.

Interesting indeed. We have done Montana a couple times, and every thing about this on the surface sure looks nice.

-5-6 hr drive versus 14 hrs to Montana.(save on mileage and gas)

-License is over $100 cheaper.

-Fairly close proximity to some civilization on this. Montana we were over an hr from the nearest gas station.

Hockey nice work on picking up a possible place to hunt.

I'm looking into bow hunting NE also next fall just send off a list of questions to the local sheriff we turkey hunt with in the spring there.

All I know if the public land around most these areas are not hit at all but hunters till gun season. So access to public is just as good as private. The land I'm looking to hunt is 200 acres of public with a stream and coolie and crops surrounding all side but the side you park on. Ton of sign and found a lot of sheds on this piece over the years.

If I read the game laws correctly you are allowed a buck and doe on one tag. Also if you have the money you can buy another buck tag. I was hoping they tossed in a fall turkey with the license like I've seen in other states.

Next season is a year away but I'm already for it to start again.

NE won't toss in a non resident turkey tag until you toss in another 100 or so.

$521 to shoot a buck in nebraska. I worked there most of the summer and that is what we could come up with. Iam looking at the reg. book now and that does include a doe permit. people were very nice on letting outsiders bow hunt their land. There were 130-150 inch bucks spotted often.

The turkey hunting in NE is great. I have been going for the last 7 years.Archery season before all the gun hunters start showing up. We do very well averge around for 8 hunters two per hunter we end up with 12 to 14 birds which is great with a bow.

I hope to find out how the deer hunting is next fall. Plenty of them around and farmers seem to let you hunt.

Well I am very surprised with my findings.

Turkey is unlimited license availability. You can purchase up to 3 tags in spring and 2 tags in fall.

Deer is all first come, first served. They open up license sales and whoever goes online and buys a license gets one until they are sold out. Archery and muzzleloader have not sold out the past years. Rifle does sell out in some areas, but some do have open tags available.

And no resident/non-resident limits. Whoever wants, can buy a license. So in theory, they could have more non resident hunters than resident hunters.

Very interesting. I am liking what I am learning so far.

You are all correct NE is a great state to hunt, but rifle deer licenses are NOT first come first serve. The residents get first chance in a drawing and any left over tags are then available to non residents and residents (for a second tag) on a first come first serve online availability.

While the 209 dollar tags are state wide for muzzy and bow the 209 dollar rifle tags are for a specific unit. The 521 dollar tag is for a state wide rifle tag where you can hunt anywhere in the state.

Hmmmm.

The guy I talked to on the phone yesterday did not say anything about resident drawings first and then a fire sale on whats leftover to anyone.

That would make sense, but I am going to call him to clarify. The reason I called him in the first place is because over email the guy couldnt make clear and concise points to anything. crazy
