Deer Attack Dog

Recommended Posts

I thought I'd post this article from the Strib for our enjoyment. I have to say I'm a bit skeptical, but I guess stranger things have happened...

BEND, Ore. - A Bend, Ore., woman says three deer attacked her barking dog and left the pet with head wounds and a punctured chest, but she's expected to make a full recovery.

Tiffany Rounds says she often sees deer in central Oregon but never had them in her backyard before Thursday. Her small dog, Daisy, clearly thought it was inappropriate and went flying out the door, barking.

Rounds told KTVZ on Monday that the six-point buck and two does started beating the dog with their hooves and then the buck tried to get her with his anglers.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist Steven George says even if it's a domesticated dog, deer react to a predator that could hurt or even kill them, so they'll be defensive.

Had a doe in the yard this Spring which is normal around here. Dog(Lab) was out with the wife.

Dog walks up to the deer, he knows isn't supposed to chase them. Nose to nose, the deer jumps from side to side and the dog thinks its playing and runs as the deer chases him. The dog runs up and the deck and the deer stops and watches. And waits.

At this time I'm outside to see whats going on. The wife said the deer and dog are playing.

Dog is back in the yard with the wife, deer still there but the dog ignores the deer.

The deer is now fixated on the dog and could care less about humans. It bolts after the dog and he runs back onto the deck and I put him in the house. The deer spends the half hour looking around for the dog then seems to be gone.

My daughter takes the dog out and guess who shows up.

This time the deer catches up to the dog and flails on it at a dead run.

Enough is enough I call the dog in, deer is waiting for the dog still as I grab the paintball marker and break it from chasing dogs. smile

We still have a lot of deer in the yard but they don't chase the dog anymore.

This was too early for fawns but it could have been close enough that the doe's instinct to protect is what I figure.

I saw a video a while back of a cat messing around with a fawn (in a city somewhere) well when momma doe came back she put the hooves to that cat and a mid-sized dog who showed up at the wrong time. It was pretty funny.

Sounds like the overpopulation of deer has forced them to live in too close a proximity to domestic dogs causing them to become too comfortable around them and no longer fearing them. Perhaps we need to push for more control or eradication of the herd to protect our dogs.

I was working in a closed community and I hear this dog yelping I look up and here was this golden Lab running at full speed from around the corner and kept booking and then came this Buck about 20 yards behind around the corner after him. I was dumb founded when the buck stopped and gave me a look as to say "You want some of this with a snort to follow the look" then carried on after the dog. Say the least I was like a deer in headlights when the buck stopped and looked at me.
