That would be blasphemy. grin

I hear ya Jonny, it’s always fun to try something new. A guy just gets shellshocked sometimes and I thought I'd try to toss in a little humor.

I will be using this this winter!

full-845-3481-northland_bionic_ice_fishi

I have this in 4lb test. Eager to try it out.

I've always liked 4lb test while fishing for pannies, in case I hook into a 5lb+ walleye or more 10lb northerns. Stupid slimers!

Caught a 33 inch northern on Minnewaska last January with 2lb line though. Eek!

My perspective on ice line has always been this:

Expensive ice line is $6

Cheap ice line is $3

It's been my experience that the more you pay the better the product. Obviously there are some cases where this is not true, but in general, it is.

I'll splurge on the "good" ice line for $3 extra. If I'm wrong, I'm out $3.

What kind of Fireline do you like? I've only used it on summer rods never on an ice rod.

I use the 1# - 1/4pd diameter stuff quite a bit in the winter. Trust me this stuff is way stronger than 1 pd test. I like it on one of my small spoon rods and pulled a ton of fish with it last year and never had the stuff break. As far as ice-up goes, I cant really say it is much worse than others. But as much as I hole hop, if it's below 20-25 im in the Trap...

I will believe that when I see it, and I will see it (or not) first hand because I (of course) will have to give it a shot.

Can't help myself smile .

Actaully a ton of research and testing went into it last year, and I think they hit the nail on the head with this one.

Heck Check this out.

From what i have seen of the Lindy line i have tried this fall is that it is very thin diameter, but a lot stronger than the packaging leads on. The copolymer also doesnt seem to have as much memory as the monos i traditionally used. I too would rather spend $6 once for a good spool of line than spend $3 3-4 times throughout the season.

I did check out that video Jonny (thank you for the link), and while good, I still feel it's mostly marketing pitch. Not to say that the line won't measure up, but I've been fooled before.

Anyhoo, I plan to give it a shot. I like that it is offered in 1# increments.

My dream line:

Doesn't absorb water, has the same tendencies (or close) both inside and outside of the shelter, low visibility, very little stretch, little to no memory....yup, that about covers it.

Last year at LOW several of us were fishing in about 34 feet of water. I (and we) lost many fish to head shakes etc. simply because we couldn't drive the hook home. Rods were of adequate length and stiffness, hooks were sharp, but the mono was just killing us. I had tried flouro before (hated it because of memory/coiling issues), and superlines (got real tired of having to tie flouro leaders on), and so I decided to stick with the mono. We landed fish, but we lost many as well.

I know I'm nitpicking, but hey, aren't we all in search of the perfect..."everything" smile .

I plan on giving the Lindy Ice Line a good go of it, and I'm sure hoping it brings me closer to the "holy grail" of ice lines that I'm looking for.

I really like the P-Line Floroclear in 3# and 5#. I'm 95% covered for pannies, perch and walleye with these 2 sizes and the line works well inside or outside.

I've been using it for 5+ years and it's my go-to line. I still try a spool or 2 of whatever's the new latest & greatest each year, but nothing has knocked it off overall.

A money saving tip is to buy the 300yd filler spools of Floroclear instead of the Floroice 100yd spools. It's the same exact line, and you can fill 3 reels for $11 instead of 1 reel @$6.

Thanks for all the input I think I might put some p-line on most of my rods and maybe try some of that new Lindy line on a couple of my poles. Can any one confirm that Floroclear and Floroice p-line is basically the same thing. I'm headed out today to get some line. It wont be long now with temps dipping in to the teens and single digits around the middle of next week.

From what I have read, the actual line diameter of the same pound test of floroice is thinner (slightly) than the Floroclear, so it is a different line. With that said, others have had success with Floroclear and it will be cheaper being able to purchase 300yrd spools vs. 100 yd.

I purchased floroice for my rods this year, but I've never tried the floroclear.

So I went to try and get my line today, getting some P-Line Fluoroclear in 6# for some of my rods and could not find any 2# anywhere. The smallest every place has is 4#, I have found 2# on the net. I am trying to decide if I should take the time to order the 2# or just go for the 4# on most of my panfish rods and maybe spend a couple of extra bucks on a small spool of 2# or 3# line for one rod in something else.

I got all my rods rigged up last night with Floroice. 2lb on panfish and 4lb on my Perch/Walleye rods. There was a noticeable difference in the line diameter between the 2lb and 4lb line. The 2lb seemed to be pretty similar to my old gamma. The 4lb was larger (obviously) and appeared to be more 'springy' like someone else mentioned, however I typically used buckshot/forage minnow type spoons for perch/eye's which have the additional weight. I didn't have time to drive to Thorne Bros, so I ordered online from a place that has 4.95 shipping and the spools were 4.96 a piece.

Well, looks like I got a mixed bag this year.

1 rod- 4# Orange Suffix Ice Magic

2 rods-8# Smoke Fire line with a swivel then a Bionic Ice Leader

1 Rod- 6# Northland Bionic Ice Camo Blue

2 Rods-2# Trilene Micro Ice in Red

2 Rods-4# Trilene Mirco Ice in Red

1 Rod- 2# Trilene Micro Ice in Clear

1 Rod- 4# Trilene Mirco Ice in Clear

1 rod- 6# Trilene Mirco Ice in Clear

I've always had good luck with the Trilene Micro Ice, but figured I try some different stuff this year. Hopefully I won't regret trying differnt line.

Wow I guess I missed the boat on all the new line out there. I have never really had trouble with the cold weather stuff from Berkeley. I will have to pay better attention the next time I'm at the store though.

After doing some more research and thinking about it today I think I am just going to go with some 4# P-Line Fluoroclear on most of my panfish rods. Is that Lindy ice line sold in any stores I haven't seen it any place? I want to try one rod with some 3# or 2# line of some Fireline or Lindy or something. If I cant find the Lindy what kind of Fireline is good to try there are so many different kinds?

I picked up my 4# P-Line Fluoroclear and I compared the diameter of the P-line to a couple of ice lines. I found that the #4 Fluoroclear had the same diameter as 3# Trilene Micro Ice, but was slightly larger then some of the higher quality ice lines like FireLine. So I think I am going to be happy with choices this year. I have never tried any of the copolymer or fluorocarbon lines before so this should be fun. I still plan on maybe trying some of that Lindy Ice Line when I find some.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
