Road Hunting? How common is it where you are?

Recommended Posts

Went out just for a few hours of daylight this morning in our "burbs" spot. Actually, it's the country but lots of lake cabins, houses and farms packed into the woods with some cropfields here and there to break it up. History has taught me the first few hours are the most productive with all the human activity so that's when I go out. Anyway, to the point of my post, it was hard to focus on the woods this morning with the neighbors speeding up and down the township roads in their pickups, wearing orange and guns loaded. I finally figured out what they were doing as it went on for a little over an hour. One would stop their truck and ready themselves to jump out of the truck and fire away into a woodlot while another swung around it with their truck to try and spook anything that might be in there. They were tearin' up the road like all get out. They weren't targeting our woods but they sure as heck scared anything that might be nearby with their shenanigans.

Similar stuff going on in you parts?

Happens all the time down in "pheasant country". They'll run deer from one woodlot to the next, down fencelines, and wait for em where the road intersects to the fenceline or next woodlot.

It's not hunting...it's garbage.

I always thought it was invented in northern Iowa. Some of the nicest people out of season become foaming at the mouth idiots every time they see a deer running in the open, they think they have to get in their trucks and run it until it just stands there, mouth open gasping for breath. They roll down the window and shoot it, then brag later in the bar how great of a hunter and shot they are. If you can't tell I don't like road hunters.

How common is it? Last year, in NW MN, it was like a pick-up parade on the rural gravel roads. And most interestingly, it started almost right away in the morning, and went until dark! It seems that lots of folks don't even want to get out of the vehicle anymore - even during "prime time".

As previously stated, it's why I have no taste for regular rifle season anymore. It just takes all the fun out of really hunting deer. I can't wait for the muzzy season!!!!

its a low blow when i get a buck on trail cam in late august. hunt hard all season for him; look for his sheds during the spring. just to stumble upon a craig$list add for a 197 inch monster.

guy said he shot the buck in northern minnesota rifle hunting....ha ha what a joke! i got the trail cam pics less than 1.5 miles from this guys front step.

whether its "road" hunting or using your porch light to shoot a buck in your back yard.... it all disgusts me!

Like carpshooterdeluxe did, just call T.I.P. or the local CO. If possible with the cells phones to day, take some pics and possible video if by some chance they do not get caught in the act or worse, they are abusing the handicap privilege. If enough people observe this issue, which sounds to be a bigger issues than I would have thought, calls and descriptions are made, justice will be served, activity will cease and Karma will come into play. smile

In North Dakota there are plenty who shoot from the road. The bigger issue is the trespassers as they are all over the place. I swear 20% of the hunters trespass.

+2

We had a situation on Saturday where some land we had promission to hunt was being trespass. Its frustrating to say the least.

Yes, one can call the TIP line but by the time the CO or sheriff gets there, the culprits are out of that area as it takes them so long as they are overwelmed with calls.

I have caught many trespasser and have never seen one stay around long enough to get video taped.

This past weekend I caught a few trespassing and called the CO. He said he will check it out but it's hard to prove the trespass law and typically they get off. I told him I also have a witness and I would drive back to ND if I had to appear in court to testify. I will now wait for a call to see what devolops and I am not holding my breath. He told me it would probably be weeks b-4 he would get a chance to contact the trespasser as I did get him name and where he was from.

Harvey,

It doesn't help that there are a dozen COs for the entire state of North Dakota. Actually I don't know if that's accurate, but if you check out how much area one of them has to cover, it's no wonder you hardly see them around. I wish the G&F would spend more money on enforcement and less money on desktop "biologists"...

From my stand I can here the same loud pipped chebbie running back and forth all day long. He loves to hammer on that thing. Then there is a dude driving a Dodge that sounds like a semi that leaves his stand by 8:30am and starts back and forth until about noon. Then he is at it again until about 3:30. Then heads back to his stand.

My wife went for a run on saturday about 10am she said every automobile that went past her was a hunter in blaze orange.

Wasn't road hunting invented in North Dakota? That's what I always assumed...

I think road hunting was invented around the time the first road was built. wink

Yep, there are plenty who do it. Some because they're lazy, some because they don't see more animals any other way. Some might even look like a road hunter just because they're wearing orange and driving on dirt roads looking around.

I'm not a fan of road hunting myself but have done it a couple times (where legal). No it's not rewarding but sometimes it happens between spots. Legal game, legal land, and legal shooting hours... what are ya gonna do?

Ethical? Like I said, not my preferred cup of tea but ethics are usually in the eye of the beholder. But maybe this thread is more about pointing out the folks who behave like jack donkeys while doing it. laugh
