what small games can i hunt?

Recommended Posts

I braught my dad to east bethel wma to help find a spot to bow hunt yesterday (we decided not to) around the area i been hunting squirels there twice and saw about 6 squirels in september, have not been there for a while until yesterday and yesterday was mainly a scout trip. I remember walking and having a bird fly away from us and my dad said i shuld have shot it since it was a game bird. He does not know the name of the bird except that it has a long nose. well this got me wondering, what have i been missing out on? I hunt squirrels since those are the only game i can identify, never see any rabbits to shoot, and have no idea about what birds can be shot and eaten.

well what i would like to know is what are the game birds i can hunt and eat and how do i locate them and find them

also how do i find rabbits?

i think this will help make me a better hunter by being able to hunt more species of game and being able to learn and identify the game animals, plus it opens up my buffet menu lol. no worries i only take as much as i can eat and i follow all game laws and game bag limits. all hunting is done with my 22lr though and as for hunting the game birds it will not be a shotgun type of shooting i plan to try and sneak on the game birds for a good shot and if they fly away i will not try to attempt to shoot.

finaly got a squirrel at east bethel. they are very smart in areas ppl hunt around. i was lucky enough to calm the squirrel out of hiding using my cutter call. i can find lots of fresh holes dug from squirrels retrieving their nuts wich only tells me when i thaught there were not manny squirrels around, theres more than i thaught they must have adapted well to the area and learn to hide very well from danger. I guess theres alot of ppl who go there to deer and duck hunt, im the only squirrel hunter from what i seen around the place however i did hear a few chots from across the swamp witch sounded like a 22. squirrels in high pressure places are just too illusive

Invest in a shot gun and you will pretty much be able to hunt ANY game animal in MN. .22 is perfect for tree rats but if you want to expand to birds then a shot gun is a most.

tidbit...rubbing to quaters together makes a great squirrel call!

If i ever get a new shotgun or handgun for deer hunting i would have my current shotgun for birds and small games.

for some reason im really likeing the squirrel hunting this year idk why. even though i have only shot one i just like going out and enjoying it like i did as a kid.

You cannot use a .22lr to take game birds other than Pheasants.

Pretty sure he can grouse hunt with a .22 if he wants. Smart not to shoot if its airborne though. Winter hunting squirrel is the same deal as fall hunting except they are not burying much after snow-just digging stuff up. They have to come out and eat sometime.

Me and my dad have hunted squirrels and ducks ever since I was 8. I love this sport even though we don't have any private land to go to. Even on the opener, every good place is packed. My dad just bought me my first real gun, ruger 22lr camo edition by realtree. I've been hunting pretty successfully this season, got about 5 in two trips. If you want, we usually have 2-3 guys go to a spot so we aren't alone. Pm me if you want in.

ok, from my experience, in the early season, they are eating nuts on top of the trees. When the leaves fall along with the nuts, they are on the ground, about this time throughout winter. Making squirrel pop out wont happen, you have to be patient and look around and listen, listen, listen! Remember to move slowly and quietly as squirrels have good eye sight and hearing. Now go get'em. lmk if you need spots to, i got a couple within range of blaine(like 30mins)

I also used a 12 ga when I hunted squirrels as a teenager. Always used #8 shot. The gun was a fixed full choke (no choke tubes). I just made sure I aimed a little infront of the squirrel to compensate for the pattern.
