Honda Vs. Yamaha

Mike Stark

Question

i did a search and found no topics on the subject.

i am going to get a new 25hp tiller for a 16ft Lund Rebel (late 80's-2002 model).

most of the info iv found on the web is about older models.

whats the better motor? is the honda worth the extra cash?

Currently have a 2 8 40 225 yamaha. Had a 90 and 40 honda. All of which had zero issues. Gotta give the edge to yami - especially in cold weather conditions. The hondas i had seemed to be much more cold blooded in the fall and spring of the year. Not knocking the honda they were good motors. As far as 3 vs 2 cyl as you mentioned the 2 cyl will most likely be lighter and can be a benefit if you fish by yourself with less weight with yourself and the motor in the back of the boat. I sure wish they offered efi in the 25hp from yami or honda that alone makes a diiference in colder temps. Goodluck on your decision can't go wrong but i don't see 1200 bucks of "betterness" in the honda. Cheers!

I took a look at the specs as well... things are really stacking up in Honda's favor...

there's always the old adage, there's no replacement for displacement.. Honda wins that one

The weight difference is also interesting.. especially considering Honda's is a 3 cylinder. Honda wins that one as well

As previously mentioned, Honda has a 3 Cylinder, Yamaha has a 2 cylinder... the 3 cylinder will give you smoother idling... another Honda win...

Price factors in... Yamaha was cheaper.. but the performance differences might make that negligible.

I think you're going to notice the difference in displacement to a certain extent, but mostly when fully loaded with people or gear.

I think you may notice the smoother idling to a certain extent... it won't be huge, but you may notice the difference.

The weight difference is negligible...

The difference in weight in the pocket book? That's tough to say. I think you'll be happy with either motor... they're both bullet proof... if you're planning on keeping this long term, as much as I hate to not say Yamaha, I think Honda provides a couple of opportunities that Yamaha can't right now. I'm guessing if you were able to look at the actual HP output of these two motors Honda would get the nod.

Neither one will ever give you a problem, so service is probably not a big issue. I own a Honda, but would not hesitate to buy a Yamaha. In my situation, my next will probably be a Yamaha since Honda jumps from 50 to 75 and my Pro-V will take a 60.
