You arent hearing things. Last evening i had 2 bucks behind me but i never got to see them. I heard the grunt first, heard them walking around, and heard them sparring. 10 minutes later a button buck came through at 15 yards and the first thing i heard from him was a grunt. Deer grunt year around for different reasons.

All deer grunt. Does and fawns grunt and bleat year round to stay in touch with one another. Buck bachelor groups do the same. It's not as loud or insistant as a tending grunt that most associate with the rut. You can still use it as an attractor this time of year.

I didn't hear any grunting last night, but lots of sparring. I had 7 bucks come by over about a 30 minute period right at dark and after. Two were sparring right under me, and two more were locking antlers about 15 yards away, and one was tearing up a tree just behind me. It was one of the most amazing hunting experiences I've ever had.

Needless to say I stayed in the tree very late to as not to spook them. I climbed down and snuck out just about as quietly as I ever have before and I don't think I burned the stand location.
