Chances of Harvesting a Booner

Recommended Posts

Guys, I know what you meant, and I know that you didn't mean anything about APR. I didn't mean to chastise anybody, just point out that the statement you made, was exactly one of the arguments against APR, that pretty soon, people will want us passing on Pope and Youngs to get to Booners. change 3 or 4 words from that post and we have one of the major arguments for APR. I don't want to ruffle any feathers, I am one that most know was in favor of APR, but your comment struck me. Reading too much into it or not.

The single best quote I have seen in this post that quantifies why many people will never have a chance at a booner is because most people would never consider letting a fork or basket walk (much less a two year old the next year) when those are the deer that need to be allowed to grow if you ever hope to kill a booner in the area you hunt.

I don't know whether we may be in disagreement or if I didn't make my point clear or not (which really doesn't matter as I am not trying to argue and I am not easily offended by disagreement :D) but I will take one more stab at explaining myself.

I really don't think that this "booner discussion" carries over to the APR argument. It just doesn't seem to have merit in an APR situation.

The reason being that eventually genetics come in to play. If you argue that you have to let every single deer walk until they are booners, you are chasing an impossibility. If that were the case, conservatively 90%or more of all bucks would never be eligible to be shot because they simply don't have the genetic make up to make book (actual net book). I just don't think most people who are in support of APR or QDM are so ill informed that they would believe that this isn't the case. APR and QDM folks are in for the most part all about giving bucks a chance to grow older than 2.5 (their formative years) and to reach physical maturity which is consequently a point where the antler growth can show some of its potential. There is a logical cut off point based on the fact that a "booner" needs to have not only the most important factor on its side - AGE - but it has to have a lot of other things that go right too. Just about any deer that reaches maturity in the wild has the potential and ability to be a gross 125" deer (nothing to scoff at), or maybe even a 140" deer, but to be a net 170" takes something special (i.e. the stars to align).

Thats just my perspective. I think that booner's are going to be few and far between no matter what people do because so many regions/hunting areas simply don't have the ingredients to produce book deer with regularity.

As far as potential goes... I have read in past publications that 1 in 200,000 deer are NET B&C. Your odds of killing an albino is FAR greater..... statisticaly.

Most bucks(like 90%+) would never be B&C if given the chance. In my opinion, who cares, theyde still be big mega bucks reguardless of score. But as far as the whole recordbook thing goes... its truly amazing as to "how big" an actual NET B&C is!

Much like fishing, I would say 10% of the deer hunters kill 90% of the true GIANT BUCKS. Location, food, and most importantly management have everything to do with it. Is not rocket science!

150" makes B&C so, 150 is a booner. sure see a lot of deer of that caliber in reader shots of MN's outdoor news weeks after deer season!!

According to the B&C HSOforum its 160 for an award and 170 for all time. I think when most people speak of a Booner they are talking about that 170 score. I'm sure some will even say net score but I am more of a gross score guy.

As long as I'm typing they also list 185 (award) and 195 all time for non-typicals.

This topic should be changed! This is a bow hunting forum, who cares about B&C. POPE & YOUNG for me.

Well i should clarify, 140 or better as a gross score and Im all smiles. Someone mentioned when you see a 160 or better its amazing the difference. WOW is tht true, but to pass on a 150 on land less than say 2000 acres I dont have complete control of, Not going to happen and Im pretty picky!

GL all, getting ready to hit the sack and dream of bucks. Hope to see a few P&Y's tomorrow posted on here.

a thaught just popped in..... remember back in the day when there was way more open public land for people to hunt. in todays world theres way more cities and suburbs and too manny land being baught. I think due to shrinking natural land the deer heard are now more concentrated in a smaller area and because of shrinking land people will be finding places to hunt and because of that shrinking land alot more hunters will be in the same area and alot of ppl will be harvesting deer wich means more bucks are takin in small areas were as before more natural land meant more disperse hunting and more bucks were able to roam free were as now in the smaller lands and alot more hunters they are taken before they can become B&C

just a thaught that popped up

boone and crockett accepts archery kills. it's a misconception that they only accept rifle kills, they even accept road kill. same minimum score for either weapon.

I can't wait to see if some of the animals right here in the city limits of Rochester get harvested this year. Prime example of what happens when deer are allowed to reach maturity. If the one in particular gets it, pics will be all over. I have pics on my phone of him from a trailcam, still blows me away how big he is.

Hey matchset funny you should post this my dad watched a solid 180" buck last night within 2 miles of your parents house eating acorns on a field edge I know it was big becuse he was stuttering when he was talking to me about how big it was. So when I shoot him can I just walk over to the house and get some help dragging it out wink. Now all I got to do is get permission to hunt the land again I used to hunt it about 12 years ago.
