The NFL and the NFLPA are engaged in settlement talks that could reduce Vincent Jackson's suspension from six to five or four games if he is traded, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Jackson's camp was pushing for his Roster Exempt Status suspension to be thrown out while the league argued that a trade would not affect that status. It appears they will meet somewhere in the middle. If traded, it now sounds like Jackson will be available to play in Week 5 or 6. The Vikings, Rams and Seahawks should start getting their offers in.

The San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee reports that Vincent Jackson's suspension will be reduced to four games after reaching a settlement with the NFL on Thursday.

He's not going to play for the Chargers again, but being eligible to play in Week 5 rather than Week 7 greatly increases his chances of getting traded. The Vikings appear to be his most ardent suitor, but the Rams and perhaps the Seahawks or Redskins are also expected to enter the mix. If V-Jax is available on your league's waiver wire, pick him up ASAP.

I wonder what kind of draft pick they're dangling in front of the Chargers...this could get ugly in a hurry if more than a couple of teams get involved.

This team still needs a q-back, in what appears to be a very strong year class this year.

He has to sit out 5 GAMES.... so the Vikes having an early bye does us no favors... hurts us actually as he cannot practice or be at the team facilities when suspended(I think). I think Week 6 would be the first game he could play for us... I think we play the Boys that week.

Updating a previous item, Vincent Jackson must be traded in a window from 4:00 p.m. Friday to 4:00 p.m. next Wednesday, Sept. 22, to be eligible to play in Week 5.

Between now and Friday afternoon, interested teams must receive advanced permission from the Chargers to talk to Jackson about a long-term deal. As long as V-Jax is traded by next Wednesday, he can practice with his new team after the Week 4 game and play in Week 5. It's a convoluted ruling, but helpful for fantasy leaguers in that it should provide closure by the middle of next week.

Yep, he can start playing in the Week 5 game. It would be a stellar signing if we can make it work. I heard they were looking for a 2nd round this year and a late draft pick next year. This guy is only 27 years old and is 6-5, I think it would be worth it if he can stay away from the booze lol.

If he comes to the Vikes, he won't be able to play until week 6. He has to sit out 4 games and being we have a week 4 bye, that week doesn't count. At least that is how I understand it....

Jackson could play in fifth game

By Kevin Acee

Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 10:39 a.m.

Vincent Jackson could play as soon as the fifth week of the season -- for a team besides the Chargers.

The NFL and the players' union reached a settlement Thursday that clears the way for Jackson to play in the fifth game for any team he is traded to.

It is believed -- and certainly the hope of Jackson's agents -- that this ruling could help pave the way for a trade.

Jackson must be traded by Sept. 22, or he will be out at least six games. Also, according to the NFL, such a trade cannot happen until tomorrow at 1 p.m. PT.

Jackson is currently serving a three-game suspension as a result of his two DUI arrests. He is also on the Roster Exempt List and will miss at least six games if he remains with the Chargers.

While the NFL maintained that even if traded Jackson was required to sit out three games after reporting, the NFL Players Association argued that a traded player is not subject to missing the three games. A player on the Roster Exempt List cannot play until the fourth game after he reports, and a suspended player cannot officially report to a team.

Three teams have been given official permission to speak to Jackson's agents. Seattle and St. Louis are two of the three, and it is possible Minnesota is the unidentified third team. The Vikings were known to be interested in Jackson last month but balked at the high asking price from Jackson.

It is not known if any or all of those team are still interested in Jackson, though reports have suggested the Seahawks are no longer interested.

More importantly, this ruling might ultimately have no bearing on Jackson's status since it is certain that any trade will be done on the Chargers' terms.

A restricted free agent, Jackson did not sign his one-year tender from the Chargers. The team still controls his rights, however, and would have to agree to a trade after Jackson and another team came to terms on a contract.

Jackson's agents said the Chargers stymied a possible Sept. 4 trade with an unidentified team. The agents said they had a contract (believed to be for one year and $7 million plus incentives) done but that the two teams could not reach an agreement.

After watching the first two games this year, I am thinking the Vikes need to save their draft picks, and just finish off the season. There is just to many holes in this team that didnt get addressed this offseason, and we are now seeing that. Trading away draft picks to rent Jackson for a half a year would only put the Vikes further back the next few years. Unless they step up and sign V Jackson for a long term contract, it will just hurt the team in the long run.

We need to package up Berrian for a pair of used socks and get someone else in there. Outside of Percy, we don't have any real talent right now. It's real easy to double up Harvin or Shiancoe and we have no attack.

I know we're 0-2, but that doesn't mean we will miss the playoffs. A lot of money has been invested in this team, I don't see why we wouldn't give it a go with a great WR. Favre has looked rusty, but he didn't come out of the gates firing last year either.

Trading for Vincent without a long term deal would be dumb, I'd never want us to trade for him just to use him this year. If we did happen to get him to a quick 1 year contract I'm sure we would be looking to sign him long term for the future since he's not that old and he's pretty good.

If you read the article from Acee posted above closely, it says he will be able to play the 5th GAME for the team he is traded to. If he comes to the Vikes, our 5th game is week 6, so I don't think he could play for us until then. I think the article says "as soon as Week 5" but then later says "the 5th game of the team he is traded to". His suspension is in games, not weeks.... I think.

I am sure we will know by 1pm tomorrow which team he will sign with. The Chargers will wait until after tonights game, to give all teams a fair shot at getting into the mix, then they will make the deal around noon, or so tomorrow.
