Equipment Insurance

Myrt

Question

Probably been covered before? Had a friend's boat robbed, tackle box and some rods, insurance agent needs proof of ownership of products thru pics.....and receipts. I need to ask my agent what to do for sure...I don't keep receipts for lures. I was thinking of keeping an annual digital photo file, does anyone know if that would work? Should the agent have a copy? If and what dollar amount would need a rider? All this seems unnecessary until it happens to you.

I have photo's of all my gear and a list itemized.

As far as a dollar amount, my household insurance will cover some and my boat insurance has plenty. I have no idea wehat I have for a dollar amount but at the time my agent and I went over it, he said I was well covered for anything.

I also go through all my gear every spring as one does acquire more all the time.

I have digital phones and all serial numbers/models of guns, rods/reels and other things kept both on my computer and on disc in the safe. I had to do itemized list with pictures for my insurance rider for my tools when i left the city. that took nearly a week to do but have it so if there are any questions i can get it completed. while this does not help now, your buddy could go thru pictures of trips etc and find pictures that might show various pieces of equipment.

I'm not about to keep receipts, but pics or video should/would be helpful. One should go thru their entire house and do the same. At least you have a pic of everything that you could look at to try to make a list. Imagine if you had a house fire! All the stuff you'd have to try to think of!!! I'm going to start this week after reading this.

Your equipment is covered as personal property through homeowners (usually) but you have a deductible to pay and then it is a claim on your homeowners policy. If you have a boat you can endorse your polciy for fishing equipment and then if you have a claim you will have a smaller deductible and it doesn't effect you like a home claim can.

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking it would be best to ask the agent what to do, that is what they are their for. There always seems to be some gray area for coverage when it comes time to pay.

Ozzie is correct. however if your boat should sink, your home ins won't cover any items in the boat. I know keeping recepts is a pain in the back side, so at least take a video of all your fishing stuff, and keep recepts for your expensive rods etc. I would recommend calling your agent and adding coverage for personal property to you boat policy as this is very inexpesive.

Hey agent Andy-

Dont want to hijack this thread...but did you guys get back up to Manitou for a 2nd trip?

I thought I remember you saying you were going to come back for another stay later on in the Summer? If so, how did you guys do?

I am in the process of getting a downrigger set up so I can get after more trout this next time! We did pretty good just trolling deep diving plugs - but we know we could have done better with a downrigger.

hope you and your gang are doing well!

PS Thanks for the advice - i need to make sure I have personal property coverage on my boat as well smile

Hey Hoffer. I read your inquiry about down riggers. I think our method of using stout rods and a level wind reel still works the best. We use 1 lb weights to reach the bottom and troll with spoons and stick baits. The bottom is so up and down that you are constantly winding up the dr so you don't break off.

We did make it back up to L.M. in early Aug. We fish for 4 days and Bob and I caught close to 130 lakers. We couldn't get any over 7 lbs. We plan to go back up for early ice out.
