Tree stands

Not that I think there is anything wrong with climbers, but I don't find them to be the best bet for your only stand. They are suited for hunting s pre-scouted tree or spot. They can be compact and portable, but they require "perfect" trees and usually require some trimming to be done just to get in the air. If the only place you hunt is tall straight poplar or pine trees, then I say go for it, but I think you'd be better suited with a hang on stand and a set of climbing sticks. Its the most versatile setup and allows you to hang in just about any tree.

Powerstroke is right, hang on's are the most versatile when it comes to variety of trees. However I have also only used climbers for years and really never had a problem finding a tree. For me they are just easier and quieter to setup, and more comfortable.

As a caveat, I do not own a climber and I never have. The reason is I don't feel like I've been in a situation where I felt a climber was the best stand for the job. I use a lone wolf stand and sticks and I find it very versatile and lightweight.

I'm thinking about trying one of their climbers this year if I know I've got a spot that I can use it.

for cheap always check out "c"list, bargin caves, or sportmensguide. I have one and very seldom use it, though where I hunt I can leave a stand up all season. If I had to take it down every day then I think it is a good choice. As for safe, biggest thing to inspect is the cable and pin and make sure the rubber coating is there on used, otherwise IMO all brands and all price ranges function the same...some may be lighter or more comfy but my cheapo was about $70 new and I could sleep in it!

I have a Summit. It is not the cheapest but it is very well built and I feel safer in it than any other stand I have ever had. I hunt the north woods so there are alot of pines (which need some trimming) and popple so trees to climb aren't usually an issue. If hunting around oaks a climber would not work too great IMO.

I think a lot of this depends on the area you hunt and the trees you can find. For whatever reason I find a lot of oak trees that are nice and strait and don't need too much trimming. If I hunted another area I might have tossed my climber aside for a hang on many years ago.

I use a Lone Wolf climber on probably 1/3 of my sits throughout the fall. I've got a bunch of hang-ons up but it's nice to move around and they're light, and most important - super quiet. It's always nice to have one for applications like Ripley and public land as well.

anybody know any good climbers? Im looking specificly at a cheap climber as long as its safe and works!

i found 2 treestands on C-list that really intrest me

one seems to be an ol'man tree stand climber going for 50 bucks!

heres the pic of it

Treestand.jpg

now the other one is going for 100 but it has no pic and the stand is a hang on type with angle adjustment the stand is called the buckfinder and i think its the dominator model

heres the only 2 pics i could find about the stand online

BUCKFINDER2.jpg

BUCKFINDER1.jpg

i plan to bow hunt out of the stands and i like the buckfinder because of the leveling option for crooked trees and dat be great for southeast MN hunting on hills with crooked trees and also without a rail in front of you like all climbers have there isnt a rail to get in the way of shooting a bow on the buckfinder... but the ol'man stand is going cheaper for a pretty all around good stand from what i can tell from reading and watching vids about it.

ol'man 50 bucks and im set

buckfinder 100 bucks plus extra cash to buy tree steps or climbing sticks wich can be another 100 bucks.

which one should i get!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

a rail can hold your bow, withoput a rail I use a bow hanger. Sometimes you get lucky to have a protuding tree limb that's short to hang your bow on. If not you may have to add that to your purchase. I never sat down while shooting, but make sure your seat and platform are comfortable.

I think a few years back there was a recall on some ol' man climbers.

I would buy their new products, but do some research for any safety issues regarding used tree stands that interest you. A person should always attach a fail safe restraint harness while asending/desending trees.

Ol' Man Treestands Recalled by TSR Inc.; Locking Pins Can Unexpectedly Fall Out, Posing a Fall Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Incidents/Injuries: TSR has received five reports of pins coming out of the treestand, including four injuries from falls.

Description: The recall involves locking pins, which secure the cables that connect the treestand to a tree.

The pins were sold with the 2006 Ol' Man Treestands, including the MV-MO (Multi-Vision), GMV-MO (Grand Multi-Vision), OMDX-MO (Original XX), GOMDX-MO (Grand XX), AMVP-MO (Multi Vision Pro), AGMVP-MO (Grand Multi-Vision Pro), AOMP-MO (Ol' Man Pro), and AGOMP-MO (Grand Ol' Man Pro).

The recalled treestands are stamped on the underside of the teeth plates with "TSR 06" and one of the following date codes: 6018, 6019, 6020, 6021, 6022, 6027, 6028, 6029, 6030, 6032, 6033, 6034, 6035, 6036, 6037, or 6041. The recall also includes the 2006 Ol' Man Replacement Pin Sets, model PL. No other models or parts are included in this recall.

...good luck

i plan to shoot sitting down so a rail would get in the way and can possibly damage a bow if it were to hit the rail during a shot

also the recall thing didnt help me make a decision as well

I'm just saying be careful and research any safety issues. Hunters already have more issues than ever before to uphold for good public perception. Each single hunting accident sits on the shoulders of all hunters.

As for sitting and shooting a bow, it can be done. But do alot of practicing.

Just practice shooting from an elevated platform at your desired stand height and fling some arrows while sitting down. Remember to bend at the waist as you'll be aiming downward through tree limbs and brush.

And the other issue of a bow hitting a rail during a shot and causing damage, that's unheard of by me.

.....good luck

theres a vid of a hunter shooting a rice crispy bar he dropped from his stand and the second shot he takes his bow hits the stand during the shot and it broke his cams and his bow string came off his very exspensive mathews bow

you can imagine the amount of force in a bow limb and if it were to hit the rail from the stand it has potential to break something.... thats why hang on stands are more suited for bow hunters cuz alot of em dont have rails to get in the way and also there isnt a rail to limit movement and shooting range and to be able to get a good shot from a stand with a rail means i have to stand up (in my mind) and that can be alot of movement.... stands with front rails are more suited for gun hunters for a shooting rail

im just trying to choose between the 2 because of price and the deals im getting for the stands and saftey is my deal and as long as i have my harnesss on i shuld be okay

I have a climber stand and love it for it is light weight sturdy and I have never had a problem finding a tree to put it in...unless there isn't a tree to put any stand in. I hunt central MN and northern MN and unless I could leave the stand out for the season a climber is the only way to go....I would have a problem setting up any other style of stand in the dark and then having to take it down in the dark.

I have a Summit broadhead packer. It folds down flat unlike most the other summits. Im not sure if they make them anymore but if you can find one I highly reccomend it, because of its packability and weight. And they do not have a shooting rail, but one can be easily added.

Go for the climber. I had a buddy tell me one cannot find a place to hang them and they are hard to hunt out off.

I have been using them for the past 8 years and would never go back to a hang on.

As far as a tre to hunt in, there have been a few times I had to locate a bit different due to a tree but I have always hunted the area I wanted to.

Some of the less expensive stands will squeak when you stand up to shoot.

Go with the best one you can afford.

Do yourself and your family one favor, get a safety harness and wear it while climbing up asnd down and while in the stand.

I have never had any issues with hitting anything with my bow either standing or sitting while shooting.

Good luck with the Tree Lounge. I own one and although it is VERY comfortable it is not an easy stand to climb with compared with other climbers IMO. I have the bow hunting platform which makes it heavy on that end. I use mine only on days I plan to hunt all day.

It also takes getting used to. When you turn around once at the height you want, be prepared to be a little skitish. Once you get used to that feeling you'll be ok.

If its all I had id use it but would much rather use other stands.

I understand $$$ might be an issue but if you can I would try and spring for a summit or lone wolf, see if you can find a used one somewhere if you have to. I have heard a few good things about Ol Man but you kind of have a 1A Lone Wolf and 1B Summit as far as quality climber stands, they are the best of the best. I know people who own cheap climbers and they hate them, they are loud, heavy, and sometimes dangerous.

I climbed with it once as a kid only to about 5 feet then was too weak to do it anymore but i have no idea how to set it up so thats what i need to learn, I think im going to stick with the tree lounge and next year ill get a better stand for now the tree lounge will have to do..... the other question that has not been answered is if i can take the stand into a WMA out of season and use it without getting in trouble

Definately go out to the state land and try it out. When you do check out the area you are going to hunt and maybe even trim the tree up some and some shooting lanes. I do that every year for my area. Sometimes I don't even hunt the tree that I trimmed out because another spot was better. I have a Summit...absolutely the best stand I have ever owned and I have used the lone wolf as well.
