Drop shot question?

Meat-Run

Recommended Posts

Ok heres my dilema, been fishing a local lake on a very specific weedline bite that has been very consistent for me. So last Friday I was out there trying to catch a few but with no luck on my go-to bait, the pig/jig. So I was wondering how large of a plastic lure to you use for drop shot and how far up from the weight do you tie the hook? This year for some reason the cabbage or weeds have not been like in the past, there a stringy, grassy kind of weed but in 18fow but it has been holding fish.

I would say that I'm very current with most if not all fishing techniques but this one I haven't perfected yet but just because I haven't needed to. My thoughts are that there getting pressured or just conditioned to my same pig/jig that I toss at them every time.

Any advise or tips to help a green-horn on drop shoting?

thanks,

mr

Meatrun, Weed spots change a lot from year to year, as I'm sure you know. If the weeds on your spot are not as good as they we in the past, there is a good chance they will not be holding near as many fish. It doesn't take much to position a large school of bass, but dont get too stuck on old spots, especially if they are weed spots. With that said, I normally dropshot with about an 8 inch dropper, 1/4 oz. sinker, and a 4 inch worm or small minnow bait.

Deitz-

When would you up-size to the 10" worm? Anything particular that stands out or just one of those "Ehh.. This little guy ain't workin' so what the heck" kind of things.

I've fairly well ignored drop shot (and finesse techniques as a whole) up until this year, so I'm kind of playing catch up here myself.

Legatto- I'll upsize when I know there are bigger fish down there but keep getting smaller fish. I feel the technique is right, just trying to fend off some of the smaller fish. I'll do it in tournaments as well once I have a limit and am looking for that kicker.

Yeah you could but that wouldnt really be a drop shot rig either...

With that setup you would lose the ability to give the subtle finesse to your bait and you would also lose too much sensitivity/contact with your bait between the slack in the leader line and the three way swivel.

The rig you describe sounds like a carolina rig/dropshot rig hybrid.

sorry guys haven't had a chance to get out yet, hope to this week but not holding my breath. Been busy and now trying to get ready for a camping trip this weekend up on Cass. The musky bite sounds promising and hope to get to my favorite bass lake before I leave, I even went out and picked up some new plastics just for drop shoting.

till then.....
