Archerysniper
Ruger super redhawk in the .480 ruger 325 grain hornady hp/xtp mags. About the same vellocity at 100 yards the .44 has at the barrel.

bogwalker
Ruger Super Redhawk .44. Matt, Have you taken bear with your .44? I own a model 629 S&W .44 mag that I have thought about using. I am not sure what round to use but I am leaning toward cor-bon hard cast lead probably 300 grain. What is your opinion?
Matt Breuer
That .44 has taken it's share of bear, yes. I believe every bear taken has been shot with a bullet from the same box. Winchester 240 grain JSP's. I believe you can get the Con-Bor's in the same round. I am purchasing a Super Blackhawk in .44 this week and plan to use the same load in it this season. At $38 a box I think I'll shoot them until the box is empty...
bogwalker
Matt, If you don't mind me asking, what is the biggest bear you have taken with your .44?
Matt Breuer
bog, it's actually my dad's .44. That's why I'm getting one this week, so I don't have to steal his every year. I haven't killed anything big with it, but he shot one over 400 with it the year he bought it, with the above listed load, and it stopped dead in its tracks. He's shot a ton of bear, but talks about that one most often, how when the bullet hit the bear it moaned long and hard instantly, and every ounce of air was gone from the lungs in a hurry. I've never had one run more than 30 yards with any weapon, I guess I've been lucky. I've often thought about taking a bear with my .357 snub, as I think at that close range it woudln't matter much. I've read about guys in Maine taking bears out of trees with .22's...
bogwalker
Matt, I have a .357 snub too but I would never use it for bear. It is my CCW for protection against 2-legged predators. I hope I never need it but I have it.
bogwalker
Do you use a scope? I am hooked on red dot sights. I need a scope mount for my 629 then a good red dot to top it off.
bogwalker
I ordered a box or corbon .44 rem mag 320gr hard cast flat nose ammo today. Pretty heavy stuff but if I use it I want it to work. Getting too old for long drags through the swamp. My wife has a .44 mag carbine so she might use some too. Has anyone else tried this ammo? Archerysniper
I use a diffrent type of corbons for my concealed weapon and swear buy them they will stop anything. I watched a corbon promo where the were shooting russian boars with the corbon .38's and dropping them fast.
Matt Breuer
Any other .44 hunters out there? I'm going to buy another box of ammo for my new pistol and thinking of trying another load out.
don62
Freedom Arms .454 Casull. shoot mostly reloads, bullets and weights depend on what I'm hunting, but I've used it on deer and bear.
