infloor heat

Does any of you know much about this?

I am planning to pour a small 20 X 10 basement floor that is currently gravel. My idea is to put some foam down and put in piping to heat the concrete in the winter? Has anyone else done something similar to this? I would think a small water heater could heat this small area up well.

Thanks in advance for any input you may have.

A water heater will work but be sure to check your area codes first. Some places do not alow you to use a water heater for heating a slab.

I have heard the same about using a water heater. Check on the Wirsbo system as they have been around a long time. I was able to learn a lot by looking at their materials. The in-floor system really makes sense to me for a basement.

The one thing people seem to overlook however is the need to put a door on the stairway. Without one a lot of cold air drops into the basement.

You can use a water heater for such application, code wise, just make sure the water heater is rated for space heating...some water heaters are rated for potable water only....In floor heat is a great way to heat any area, but in my opinion the cost involved for your time and materials for a 200 square foot area is not worth it.

The idea is to keep it heated year round. Thus only need to drain the lines to the sinks and antifreeze in the toilets. Currently I have to drain all lines in the winter after each time I use them. I read that infloor heat is the most efficient? I know it may cost more to put in but thought it would be very reliable? What other heater methods would be recomended for year round heat in a small space that is fully insulated?(Walls and ceiling)

I do not want to use a space heater.....Fire hazards.

Thanks

It is something you can Do yourself. I think Wirsbo is only sold through wholesale houses, Check the NIBCO Pex Brand. I know the plumbing Department at Menards sells all the required pieces to put a system together, and they can send up to the manufacturer to get you a custom Quote. that don't cost you a penny.

some stores even have classes on how to put it all together.. Good Luck!!

I've installed a fair amount of infloor heat. For this application, I'd say skip it and go with electric heat. Too expensive to install for what you are using it for. Someone mentioned how easy and simple it is from what he saw. If what he saw meets code, I'd be surprised.

What Erik you trying to become a fitter now grin. Another thing to remember is you will need to install a heater dedicated to the infloor heat you can not use the same heater as your plumbing fixtures in the house, the only way you can is if you have a combi core that is listed and approved for potable water and space/radiant heating.

Hey Jeremy, ain't it about time we take some work back from the fitters?

I put the stuff in mostly residential jobs a few year back.

Still working for Egan? I'm with Doody now. Got a project down at the Minnesota Zoo. Long drive but the job should last for sometime.
