Hail damage to vehicle, "totaledl?"

nine-tiner

Question

so driving thru Richmond yesterday and got caught in the hailstorm. now my 07 Sierra 1500 has 20-30 hits on the hood and roof, and 3-6 or more on front quarters, doors, and bed rails. Also took out the windshield and headlight...what are the odds it is a "total loss" according to insurance??

ah the power of mother nature...

A quick check to nada shows your truck is worth anywhere from $15-20K. I would say it won't be totaled. Sounds like a few grand in damage, but probably not half of that value.

I'm not an insurance adjuster, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

what success do you think a hail dent guy might have? I know they put dry ice in them to pop them out or something like that, but a windshield and headlight will be under insurance i would think. i listened to that storm go through the area on the scanner, you could listen and follow it along on google earth. sorry to hear you got hit with it.

Paintless dent repair guys can do wonders to hail damaged vehicles. They have a special set of tools to work the dents out.

Tough to say what the insurance company will do though. If they total it I'd check into the PDR option because it might be worthwhile to buy the truck back and then hire a PDR guy to get it back to an acceptable condition. Depending on your financial situation with the truck you might come out money ahead.

You should have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express!

I've had paintless done a couple of times and very satisfied with the results! It was $125 a ding but I would bet it would be less for multiple dings in the same panel

After the June 25th hail storm that hit mankato, my vehicle was "nearly totaled" said the adjuster...50 quarter size dents spread out across the entire vehicle...about $1600 in damage/repairs. I think the insurance adjuster was quite nice for not totaling my vehicle. I estimated the value of my car to be approx $1500 at best according to KBB.

A 2007, no way there is enough damage to call it a total loss. Pay your deductable and get her fixed IMO.

I bought a truck a number of years ago from the storm that ripped through Northfield. never fixed the damages and I really could care less. I say cash the check and splurge on something.....you'll never have to worry about a door ding again.

couple years ago, we went to a Football game at Burnsville HS. after the game there was a large group of teens standing near my truck talking when my friends and I walked up. I said, "WHAT HAPPENED TO MY TRUCK" 20+ teens scattered likes leaves in a storm. It was hilarious

My Accord got nailed a few years back. At the time, we were planning our wedding, and the $2500 check came in real handy. Still got the Accord--plenty of hail dents in it, but my wife doesn't mind one bit.

Drive it dented and enjoy the improved fuel economy. Mythbusters did a show where they took a car and dimpled the entire thing (think golf ball) and it showed an inprovment in fuel economy from alterring the air currents and drag

The best vehicles to own are the ones you dont have to worry about appearance. You can tear through the woods, park in the front row, let a deer bleed out in the bed, slide sideways into a snowbank, ect, ect and just say "oh well". grin

Well after dealing with the "catastophe" team of adjustors...a little under $4k in their estimate. Body shop says estimate is defintely "low"...but that they take care of that with the insurance company. He says the bill will go up because several of the dents won't respond well to PDR because they are to deep and to sharp.

And as far as just cashing the check and splurging....that is a no go with any vehicle with a loan on it.....at least with my ins co.

I would have fixed it anyway....

I few years back my 2000 F150 got smoked with hail in the tornado/storm that hit hugo. No broken windows, just plenty off deep hail dents covering most of my truck. At the time I was looking at selling my truck and getting a more fuel efficient vehicle that could also tow.

After some research I was hoping to get at the most $8,500 by selling it. The hail turned out to be god sent cuz state farm gave my $11,200 with the option of buying my truck back for $5,200. I took the $ and ran smile

Dent repair adds up quick, make sure its flawless or fight for a total-loss.

Another note, this was the 2nd time I had major hail damage. The 1st time totaled around $4000 where they replaced the hood and had to cut my roof off.

I was never happy after that due to increased noise at highway speeds coming from the roof area.
