bae501
I planted a few pumkins out in my clover food plots. Anyone ever plant them or other garden veggies?
buckhunter21
We have had pretty good luck with pumpkins the last few years. The first few years we tried them they didnt really touch them but then for some reason they started hitting them like crazy, maybe just had to get used to them or something. We usually plant about a 1/8 acre of them in rows, that way you can spray down the weeds once before they start vining out. 1/8 acre doesnt seem like much but that makes alot of pumpkins!Turnips are also a great choice and alot easier and cheaper than pumpkins. The deer love them and will try to paw them out of the ground even after the ground freezes. Those are the only things that I plant that I guess you could consider garden veggies. Otherwise its good old corn and beans.
jeffreyd
the oregon state university has a forage information HSOforum that can help identifiy legumes and plants for food plots. if you do a search for the fis at oregon state u, it brings up the site. i took a couple classes from the professor who runs the dept and he knows his stuff. just another idea. jeff
Archerysniper
I planted the leftover pea plants and the deer love them as long as they dont over browse them till the get about 6" tall then the will be able to withstand the deer pressure
BobT
My ex-wife's uncle used to plant a garden on some property he had where our hunting shack was. Did he have ulterior motives? Maybe. I do recall that the deer really used to go after his rutabagas. Every year you'd see where they had been digging them up.
hockeybc69
Deer love the punkins. I planted around 50 mounds this spring with 4 seeds per mound. Purpose is for the kids to be able to go out and pick some for themselves, and the deer are welcome to chew on some too.
BLACKJACK
I planted pumpkins for deer one year, I got some seeds for huge pumpkins, some of them were hundreds of pounds. Took a while for the deer to figure out that they were edible, I had to chop a couple open for them. After that they started eating them, first thing they'd do is get to the inside and eat the seeds. The thing I didn't like about pumpkins is that they ended up being one big weed patch, lots of pumpkins but also lots of weeds!!
