Any Velvet?

Recommended Posts

I just happened to catch a very nice buck in my yard last night visiting a mineral site, I didn't get a real good look at him but he was growing antler out as wide as his ears already so needless to say I am little bit excited for bow season to get here. The killer is I have been meaning to get my game cam out for a couple of weeks now but too many house projects are keeping me busy, I know terrible excuse, I am really wishing I would have taken the 5 minutes to put out my cam because I could have easily gotten multiple pics of him.

Anyone else seeing any velvet?

At 7:35 AM on 5/31 a small buck walked down the lawns on 32nd Place North in Crystal as jauntiilyas could be. Everyone was gone or sleeping in. It disappeared as it headed toward Winnetka Ave. It was in velvet. And I may have seen the same buck crossing 36th Ave N just West of Boone along the drainage ditch at dusk on 8th of June. Haven't been up North yet. Thought it might be interesting.

past trail cam experience has tought me that true shooter bucks, 140" or better typically grow straight out towards the tips of the ears before any points other than little brows start growing. ive been keeping an eye on two of these deer so far. im guessing they are the two bucks i was gunning for last year. the year before that they were also together. good to see they are hanging out again, and even better yet, still around. two true dandies that have slipped through the cracks. maybe this fall!!!!!! april 25 I had antlers on trail cam. they werent nubbins, but i knew they werent going to be impressive this year either!

Yes, there is some good growth going on out there right now on the trail cams. The balmy April weather certainly started the growth sooner than last season in my area. Hopefully it means they are growing larger this year due to the earlier green forage, and not that they will just stop growing a little earlier this summer.

Saw one last night up close with atleast 8 points already. Seemed to be sprouting some sticker points as well. Glad he didn't end up in the grill of my pickup.

Good info vister, I've often tried to project what some of my early velvet bucks might look like but I don't have enough summer picks of the same buck to make any kind of an educated guess. Hopefully this year will be different, my cams are finally in place.

This morning I saw a very nice velvet buck. Unfortunately, this deer had been hit by a car. I didn't get a great look at it, but if it is the deer that I think it is, it is a shame. I had been seeing this deer for the last 3 years and it's one of those deers that you would trade all of your possesions for just to get a chance at. Too bad nobody will get a chance at him now. What a shame.

Yep, seeing some velvet out there.

Im going to say his brow tines are done growing! take notice to the pointedness of them. you can always tell when antlers are still growing. the ends are almost always very rounded. when they arent rounded anymore, they are usually done growing that particular point, or mainbeam. main beams are usually the last to lose that club like look!! Man, dont antlers look big this time of the year, the circumfrence that is?!

im my opinion, the only thing that beats split brows is very long brows grin

Vister - This buck has shown to be an early grower the last couple years. He seems to be 2-3 weeks ahead of the other deer, and unfortunately he quit growing in mid-july last season. I have many other angles of him over the past month, and it would appear that his brows are just about done. As to the mass, don't be fooled by the velvet on this particular critter, his bases are legitimately the size of beer bottles.

I know the feeling, same thing happened to me a few years back, except it was a week before the bow season opened. I never did see the buck or get a pic of him but a lot of people knew he was in the area and from all accounts he was a very nice 10, maybe in the 140's or better.
