harvey lee
Many states now limit the bucks that can be harvested and some have point restrictions.Minnesota has if its brown, its down. That type thinking will not grow larger bucks.Fish slot limits have worked and there is no reason that point restrictions would not work either.Worst senerio is that the meat hunter may have to be a bit more careful for a few years to let the baby bucks grow a bit.I am not at all against meat hunters as I also like to enjoy venison for a meal. I choose to shot does for eating as they are simply better eating.I do not see MN ever changing the deer hunting program as the "It's brown it's down" has been around to long and many simply want a deer. Mn typically seems like they are only interested in selling license's and this saying fits MN.I have not hunted Mn for close to 20 years as I want a better chance at a nicer buck. Big Dave2
I can tell ya exactly why we are dropping, but thats a whole different can of worms. it has to do with too many young bucks being shot!!!! Then how did Minnesota grow all of those big bucks in the past? Were people letting small bucks pass back then?
Jameson
I would say it has to do with having more hunters now. Before, their were more "cracks" for the young bucks to slip through. Now, with a hunter darn near everywhere, the deer don't have the same chances of not being seen by a hunter as they once were. If we want to replicate what we once had, a Buck and Doe Lottery does it best. Doesn't North Dakota have one of those for gun season? copied from the nd.gov regulation HSOforum: Quote: ...Deer Gun - No more than 116,775 licenses will be issued. Special permits designating type of deer and unit are a part of the gun license. Muzzleloader - State law allows 2 percent of the total number of white-tailed deer gun licenses available each year to be issued as muzzleloader licenses.... RumRiverRat
I'm all about harassing/razzing a fellow hunter/friend for taking a deer they shouldn't have. They'll learn soon enough whats acceptable. You cannot be serious....................what's acceptable to you does not matter.
harvey lee
Yes, in North Dakota, one had to apply for a buck and a doe license for rifle. One cannot simply purchase a buck license.Archery hunters can take either sex.Iowa also has a later rifle hunt that's not during the rut.Minnesota just wants to sell tags.People will shoot what they want I guess. When I registered deer, one would not believe how many hunters shoot fawns.I was out hunting and a guy came to register his deer, my said called it a glove box deer as it was so small. What's the point in shooting a small fawn or for that matter, any fawn? Jameson
So, Harvey Lee you travel to hunt in a state that practices buck and doe lottery, but insist in your home state that APR's are the way to go. Interesting.Sigh, I have a hard time shooting fawns now a days, too. Since I do my own butchering it is easy to realize how little meat they have. But in the metro area here, where their is way too many deer, and limited places to hunt, every fawn I see gets blasted. It may be the last time that deer walks in front of a hunter. On the other hand, at the Lottery hunting area, no fawn is shot, except by new deer hunters trying to get their first deer. When I look back on last year, the highlight of that year was getting someone their first deer, a fawn. I was part of a drive that pushed them that deer. That memory surpasses me taking my largest buck in my lifetime last year. The fawn did eat better.Sorry for the thread hijack, back to talking about B&C and P&Y.... harvey lee
I have hunted in North Dakota for the past 20 years as my chances are so much better at a nicer buck. Yes, I have shot them also.

LightningBG
You cannot be serious....................what's acceptable to you does not matter. It sure does if they want to continue hunting with me, on my land, with my help.Edit: And a lot of these "acceptable" practices aren't implemented by myself. I hunt a lot of locations (mine and others) and most are deemed "acceptable" by the various owners. If someones not willing to abide, they simply wont be asked back the next year or they will get the worst razzing by their own family members.
