Frog Help

Whopper Stopper

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction. I bought a kayak last week and in-between paddling I am thinking of fishing bass out of it. I have not bass fished for a long time. One of my favorite methods was tossing a rubber frog amongst the pads and waiting for a hog to inhale it. Anyway at Gander this morning I was shocked to see all the frogs they carry. Not only that but they were $10 to boot. My question is can someone recommend a good frog for my purpose? Also do you have any suggestions of other baits I should try?

Most of our Summer is spent chasing musky. With the numbers of people out on the lakes canvassing for the same fish I am looking forward to a little peaceful solitude. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've been using the "Scum Frog" line of frogs for a few years and have no complaints. They're only $3/each and are pretty durable. I've caught quite a few accidental pike on them and they survived the teeth. Hard for me to justify a $10 frog when all the bass will see is the rough outline or shadow through the weeds. Save your money for braided line, cuz you'll need it!

SPRO frogs are great...but for half the price, try the store brand frogs that are almost identical. Gander and the big C have them, they work almost asgood as the SPRO, and half the price

Thank you for the replies. I will head back there tomorrow and pick out a couple. Now I know what to look for.

I have a 6' 6" All Star graphite rod. A Shimano 4000 spinning reel and some 15-pound line. Roger Rucci from Joes sporting goods set me up with it some 10-12 years ago. I also have a Fenwick HMG seven footer with a Shamano Curado CU 200 reel. It is loaded with some braided line that I no longer remember the name of. For whatever reason I always go back to the spinning reel. I can throw musky junk all day long and never have any over run. One throw with the Curado and it's time to pull out a knife and start whacking. Gets expensive!

Whopper,

If you're set on using spinning tackle you can get away with lighter versions of frogs--say the 3/8 to 1/2oz. versions. In this case, Scum Frogs or the Tom Mann frogs are less expensive options. If you can get to Cabelas, they sell a six-pack of their frog offering, known as the Chuck-It Frog, for $19.99. This model's available in 3/8 and 5/8 versions, it works really well, and it's a steal. If you stick with 15# line on your spin reel, it's best if it's a braid.

In a perfect world you'd use your casting rig for froggin', as it's far more suited to fishing the conditions one usually associates with these lures. If you do use a casting rig, I recommend using frogs in the 5/8oz. range, as anything lighter can be tough to cast.

I also think Spro Frogs are great but Scum Frogs are also good for the price. The past few years I have used a 7'MH HMG for all my froging but I was losing a lot of fish because the rod just didn't have enough power to get their head out of the thick stuff. I just got a 7'H rod that should do the job. Heavy braid (30lb+) is practically a must.

I will second the spro frogs they rock and i get way more strikes out of them but like another said stick with scum frogs if you will be using spinning gear.

If your using a lighter setup you are going to lose more fish especially since frogs excel around heavier cover. My current frogging rod is a 7'6"H with a burner reel on it spooled with 40lb power pro and it really has increased my frog fishing success.

Last of all dont forget to time your hookset right. Make sure you feel the weight of the fish before setting otherwise you will pull it right out of their mouth and lots of fish miss the bait the first time around.

Good Luck

I like to throw the Zoom Horny Toads. I've caught countless fish over the past few years on these lures. They aren't that expensive, usually 4 dollars for a pack of 6 or so. They hold up pretty well. I'd fish them with heavier braid, I throw 30 pound Power Pro. It is a terrible feeling to lose a fish to broken line, I've not had that problem with the 30 pound. I enjoy the floating frogs, but my hookup ratio just isn't as high.

I vote brown SPRO. Sometimes the Bobby's Perfect Frog is good since it has a white belly on it. I frog it with 20lb power pro BTW now. It casts just as far for me and gives a little more muscle in those mature lily pads. Landed me two 19"ers last week here in the metro. Still waitin on the BIG beasts!

I prefer the SPRO and heavier style 5/8 oz frogs.... I use 40 lb braid...One thing I have noticed is my hooking percentage went way up with the lighter, softer frogs,(i.e. scumfrogs) however, you cant get them out nearly as far using a big heavy stick and 40lb power pro....
