Shimano rod exchange store

Just wanted to find out if anyone knows a fishing store around the twin cities that will exchange broken rod. One of my Shimano Cumara broke in half over the weekend while I was fishing for white bass (which is kind of odd...usually seen it break by the tip but never in the half way point). I know these rods have lifetime warranty on them and that I can send it back to Shimano headquarters in Irvin, CA.... but that usually takes a few months to get the a new rod back. So if anyone knows where to exchange it....thanks in advance.

Bought this rod in California when it first came out....I was still living there at that time. I could return it to that same store but it would be the same as sending it to Shimano headquarters. Do I need to call Thorne Brothers first or can I just walk in?

I've exchanged broken Shimano rods at Thorne Bros before. They're pretty good about honoring Shimano's over-the-counter warranty. I've heard the same about Cabela's. Haven't tried Capras or Joe's yet, but from what I've heard, Joe's will not do over the counter exchange. When I talk to other retailers who do, they tell me that it's Shimano's warranty and they have to honor it. So I don't know why or how Joe's wouldn't. ??

When I broke my son's shimano I called several stores and what has been posted is correct. Joe's will charge, GM doesn't do it(or don't have any); Cabela's, Thorne, and Capra's will do otc. Best to call ahead to see if they have the one you need to exchange and have them hold it. Make sure you tell them up front that you are doing a otc warranty exchange.

For those of you that have sent them in to Shimano, how long did it take for you to get your replacement?

I sent 1 to Shimano and 1 to Loomis and had the loomis back in less than 2 weeks. I haven't heard anything from shimano yet. You would think the turnaround would be similar since they own Loomis.

Pretty odd for a store to sell you a rod with an over the counter warranty and then not honor It . I personaly would look at another retailer for my next gear purchase If that was the case.

I also feel that there should never have been such a thing as a lifetime warranty on fishing rods. If it wasn't for the warranty, would it realy cost up to 400.00 to manufactur and make and profit from a rod sale. when worked at well known retailer years ago. I was amazed on how much mark up was on rods.

Its almost like prepaying the manufacture for future rod purchase in the event it breaks your likley going to send it in for warranty. Instead of purchasing a new rod from a potential competitor.

don't get me wrong shimano has awesome product as do others

just a thought

Definitely don't bring a Shimano to Joe's, you will be paying $20+tax for them to send it in and be waiting 5+ weeks to get it back. While at Cabelas in rogers I was told that they will do the over the counter, and he also stated that Thorne bro will do it too.

Now if you have a St Croix that breaks that's a different story. I would highly recommend bringing that to Joe's. Joe's sends that in for the same $20+tax.

If you send a St Croix on your own you are paying $20+s/h if you are the original registered owner, and $50+s/h if you're not.

By using Joe's they are basically shipping it for you for free (saving you $15-$20) and I've never had to pay the $50 for not being the registered owner.
