My buddy caught a 47 inch pike on LOW today, he thought it was a male an I said no way males dont get that big, he procceded to describe a protrusion of about 3 inches long, hard an in front of the anus, therefore he thought, well you know, the fishes thinger jobby. I dont think so buddy, So at my freinds expense, cause I'm sure there are just to many opportunities here for chuckles, but would sreiously like know if anyone has an Idea on what that might be, because I cant belive the fish is a male with a well endowed thinger jobby. Be serious now, boar

it's a female for sure, I know that. My buddy is just on the shy side of fish ology so to speak, I'm not an expert any means either. That was my first thought too, Limpmorticoulus............lol. No serious thou, I was looking a little more closley at the only good photo by cell phone an although you can kinda see some protrusion behind his hand what you dont see is an anus fin which is located right underneath the top rear dorsal fin on pike. Its just not there an he is'nt folding it down by holding it. So either a deformity or a healed over wound from years past, an what fin there was has calcified to a bony barb. boar

Boar, could you see if there was a small incision in the belly of the fish? Could he move the the protrusion in question (I'm serious). And was it more the size of say a AA battery?

I ask these questions because my buddy speared a northern early this winter that when cleaned he found a transmitter of sorts in the belly of the northern (just infront of anus). There was a small incision visable after looking more closely. I not sure if the DNR has such a study going at LOW but a possibility.
