Do they ever put these on sale? I would really like to see one in action and compared to a solo. The auger i have now is good but i would like a new one.

No, as they normally sell out. Pretty much everyone is out of them because they work so darn well.

You won't be disappointed in a Nils. If you search youtube, there should be videos of Nils in action vs other brands.

They are not only hard to find on sale, they are hard to find used. Folks who buy them keep them. Might try to go to the Nils Web site and see if they have a list of dealers by state that you can call around to.

Otherwise, odds are pretty good you'll be waiting until next season. Joe out at the Red Rock Store said the one I got about a month ago was among the final product order of the season from Nils, and that no new stock would be available the rest of this season.

my powerhead is fine I know the tanaka would be better but no point in spending the extra money till she dies. Besides it would be lighter just switching to the nils 8" over the chipper auger that sm runs.It is heavy. I cant find one anyway, might have to wait till next year. I like the lazer i have but not being able to sharpen it makes me mad. I will get the nils and then sharpen it at least that is the plan next season. Are the Tanakas quieter then the strikemaster? I dont think the sm is loud at all. And compared to the jiffy it is like a church mouse!

The ice gator nils adapter does just that. I think its about 30$.

That adapter works for sm powerhead to nils auger connection?

The srtikemaster power bit bolts right up to the gator. So the driveshaft on the gator is the same size as the crank on a strikemaster powerhead. The adapter makes the nils bolt up to both.

Good to know thanks.. did you ever pick up the hand auger? if so there is no reason you shouldn't have this combo in action so i can get some feed back!jk it will make it easier for me to switch now knowing it can just be bought through icegator thanks!

I haven't had a whole lot of time with the combonation yet. My current powerhead is in rough shape right now and I have not felt real comfortable running it with the nils bit. I have had the nils as backup hand auger since I don't trust the power auger. I am going to fix it this summer and give it to my dad with the lazer bit so he has got a power auger. I am going to pick up a solo 3hp head and then run it with the nils as my main auger after that.

The only drawback so far that I can tell is that it is a bit tall. It depends on if that bothers you or not. It is about as tall as the lazer with a short extention. It works nice though because you do not have to push down at all while drilling. Pretty fast too.

I have had mine for a few weeks now. Big buck buster on here hooked me up with his. I couldn't find one anywhere. I guess they are really tough to come by late in the season almost everywhere. I wasn't even gonna bother with it but I want to do a late season walk in bwca laker trip and needed a hand auger.

Slurpie--I can tell you of a story from this weekend that will give you some comparison between Nils and SM. At the end of a tournament, four of the contestants who all own the new SM Solo were racing each other. One of the guys had about two feet of pull cord hanging out that wouldn't retract. As they were competing, a guy I know said he wanted to race them with my Nils. So he went and grabbed it and got in on the action. I wasn't watching them (I knew what the outcome would be anyway) but my fishing partner stuck his head in the truck and said, "The Nils is kicking their butts." Surprise, surprise. This happened earlier in the year at a different event. The guy who was racing my auger against the SMs said he drilled five holes and part of a sixth in the time the fastest of the Solos drilled just three. Throw in the weight difference (about five pounds--very significant when you're drilling 50, 100 or more holes) and it's a no-brainer. The Solo owners always give me a hard time about owning a Nils, all of which amounts to just about nothing when you consider the lame complaints they have. Things like, the Solo has more horsepower--so what, Nils is still faster. The more hp only adds more weight. The hole is too small--I own a six inch, you can buy them with an eight inch cut. It leaves too much slush in the hole. Buy a scoop. It takes a few seconds to clean out the hole. The blades are too expensive. SM has great customer service, what do you do when your auger breaks? Well, I've had mine for about five winters, I ice fish a lot, and haven't had one mechanical issue. Besides, there are plenty of small motor shops that service Tanaka motors. One thing I've learned through all this is old affiliations die hard. Even when it's obvious Nils has a superior machine the SM boys won't admit it. If a SM performed like the Nils does, you bet those guys would be bragging about it. In fact, they do. They're so impressed by the increased cutting speed that Solo has over the old SMs, indeed they should be, but it still doesn't beat a Nils. I have no affiliation with Nils. None whatsoever. I'm just an extremely satisfied customer who out drills everyone else. So if you want the opinion of someone who owns a Nils and has seen and experienced what it does compared to the best of the SM models.....buy yourself a Nils and own the Cadillac of augers!!

I have a Jiffy stealth stx 3 hp 9" and that thing is heavy...I drill many holes when I'm chasing crappies on Upper Red Lake or any other lake for panfish. I don't think about how heavy it is and how hard it is to carry it around, hole after hole, maybe it's because I'm still young and staying in shape helps out a bit.

Nils may be faster and lighter but if my Jiffy does the same thing in drilling holes, I'm glad! I would like to try out a Nils someday though, I bet once I try it out and notice the big differences I will never go back to any other brand.

I have friends who wont try my Nils because "I dont want to get spoiled". I had one friend try it and he jokingly said "Its not much faster than my Eskimo". I had to laugh. Those who have tried my Nils all want one and several have purchsed them. None have had any complaints but the blade cover, wich everyone struggles with I know, and the little slush in the hole. No biggy I have a ice scoop.

I have owned or tried about every auger out there and my Nils blows them all away no matter what the other companies might claim. In my experiences theres no auger as light, fast, long, effortsless and reliable as my Nils.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
