i know snappers arent roughfish... but... got this big girl in july, biggest snapper i have ever caught, picture doesnt do it any justice... the bottom of the shell was 20+" across. (my hands fingers fully spread out, tip of pinky finger, to tip of the thumb is about 9" and there was at least an inch over the end of each finger

Dan Rodewald (DrRodey) and his first bowfin from last night!

IMG_02701600x1200.jpg

i hooked into 2 bowfin last night. the first one was a monster! but it tangled in the anchor rope, and we couldnt get the net under it with all its splashing around, and it pulled off! the other one just through the hook.. i was horsing them in quite a bit because i was using my heavy rod so that was probably the main reason. we were float fishing with cut bait.

but we wasted a whole bunch of time fishing for snappers before the bowfin bite.

i saw the first one and wanted to catch it, and his was the only one set up with a heavy bobber and a big hook. and it broke his rod... oops! blush

so after that dan wanted to catch his first snapper. and we were having them come up all around us, then dive back down. like they were trying to ambush us. lol. it wasnt working too well because they were leaving a huge trail of bubbles from the bottom.

number 2! feisty thing..

i also caught one while fishing for bowfin. (was actually the one dan was going for lol)

no picture because it was bleeding a bit from the hook wound

Nice snappers. Even cooler YM shirt too!

Geez jake, you'll fish for anything won't ya? I guess you can't really call it fishing, is turtling a real word?

lol ya. me and dan were wasting time fishing for panfish waiting for the sun to start setting so we could fish for bowfin. and we tried caatching any snapper that popped up

the past 2 days i have been fishing around fergus. i left late at night on monday (well... it was 1 am tuesday morning to be exact...)

i arrived at orwell around 2 am. and did a little bit of scouting and found hundreds of fish gulping the surface of the water. idk if they were carp or buffalo. but after a while of fishing i finally hooked one. and got it withing hands reach, it looked like a buff with its plump head. i reached down and just barely touched it it took off and threw the hook. dang it! normally i consider touching a fish catching it... but it doesnt count because i have no idea if it was actually a buff.

i couldnt get any to bite after that, then i headed to a new spot. and parked for a few hours. i woke up at 6 and scouted the new area. right as i got to the waters edge i spotted a nice bigmouth buff! probably in the mid teens to 20lb range. but i didnt have my rod. the spot looked promising, i went back to the car and got my rod, and started fishing. i focused my efforts on stalking because of the ammount of fish i was seeing feeding along the shore. carp, buffs, shorthead redhorse, silver redhorse, white sucker.

the small smallmouth bass posed a threat on every cast toward a feeding fish... taking the worm before it even hit bottom... but i kept trying to no avail

so i went below the dam, and was catching carp pretty consistantly, then i stumbled upon a small stream flowing into the river that was FULL of nice smallies!

i was fishing anywhere from just enough water to cover their backs, to 3 feet where the river and creek merge. it was so much fun sight fishing for those beautiful fish! and given how many nice ones i caught, i lost just as many! some even bigger!

i went back above the dam, and looked under an overhanging tree and saw a couple carp sucking around lazily among the limbs. i sat and watched them, until a nice 5-6lb bigmouth buff swam in amongst them! i stalked and fished that guy for almost a half hour all the way down the shoreline to the dam, but he showed absolutely no interest in my bait! DANG IT! it was really cool fishing for him just like i fish for lake winona carp here in alex. he was so close to shore i could just drop the worm right in his face

i went back to the smallies for the rest of the stay there, checking for buffs periodically to no avail.

i know where i will be going again sometime in the near future!

Question: How do you unhook the snapper without loosing a finger?

pull the line back toward its shell. the snapper will sink its head into its shell with its mouth open. hold the line tight, and use a long pliers.

Neat! I'm still not looking forward to hook a turtle though.

Nice smallies btw.

All the turtles I get catfishing do the same pull-their-head-in trick too, but when you go in with a pliers, BANG, they lunge out at you. Just make sure you've got a long enough pliers. wink On some bigger ones, I just try prying it out with a long forked stick or cut the line. The softshells seem to be even worse, with the longer neck.

thats why you pull the line backward toward their tail, and hold it as tight as you can, it keeps the head in the shell, or at least slows down a strike ALOT. ill post a video of how i do it sometime soon.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
