Washburn Turns Down Twins Offer

I'd be much more concerned about his 7.33 ERA and 1.558 WHIP with Detroit last year before they shut him down. He'll be 36 yrs old this year. Aside from a few good months with Seattle early last year, his career was average at best.

The last thing the Twins need is another Livan Hernandez, Ramon Ortiz or Sidney Ponson. Another "veteran" starting pitcher they sign at a bargain price and pray he pitches better than he really is.

And we all know how well those signings turned out...

I understand what you are saying.... but I would much rather have these constant one year, cheap hopefuls, than throw huge $$$ at a free agent pitcher that almost always bites you.. .like a Zito...

No one is claiming that the Twins should sign Barry Zito. I was just pointing out their track record for retreaded pitchers is not good, and Washburn, in my opinion, is just another example.

I understand what you are saying, but my point is, they take very low risk chances. If they were to sign Washburn to a 2 yr/$10million deal, that would be low risk compared to a 5yr/$80million deal like a John Lackey got... Their track record hasn't been outstanding, but as much as everyone wants to throw Livan in this group, I don't think you can compare him with Ortiz and Ponson... didn't Livan get us 10 wins before we shipped him??

Bottom line is the Twins will always operate this way... it just seems that we are so close to having all the pieces in place we need to take a BIG chance... Washburn isn't that chance, but there will come a time in the offseason or during the season where we could take that BIG chance and we won't..

I would definitely put Livan in that group. His 5.48 ERA and 1.632 WHIP during his stint here was so bad they placed him on waivers during the season.

I would much rather see that $5 million go to a 3Bman than Washburn, I just don't see any upside. The BIG chance you will soon see is a huge contract given to Joe Mauer I believe.

I guess I see it a little differently...

Hernandez 10-8 139.2 innings pitched

Ortiz/Ponson combined 6-9 128.2 innings pitched

I agree no one feared him and his ERA and WHIP weren't great, but he ate up a lot of innings that if not for him, a young guy would have been forced to log those innings when he probably wasn't ready to do. I just think Livan did us a decent service... did we over pay, sure we did, but almost all veteran pitchers in baseball are overpaid. He also had 2 CG's.

I'm glad we no longer have him because you always worried about home many runs you needed to score, but he did get us 10 wins and ate up a good chunk of innings...

As far as Mauer being the BIG chance.... In my opinion he is as safe a signee as you can get... you never know what injuries might come about, but worse case scenario we have one of the top 2 hitters in baseball as our DH for the next 5-6-7 years....
