Ideas for ice rod & reel case?

About 8yr ago I bought a 27in 'er so black-plastic toolbox from Fleet Farm ... durable as all heck ... with the tray in, I can keep about 5 'er 6 combos in it. With the kids comin' along, I'm gettin' to where I might start carrying my tackle in some other sort of contraption ... take the tray out ... and carry a couple more combos in it. I wanna say it says "Cortico" on it ... might still have 'em.

'Course, every rod I've bought since is 25in, max ... suits me, fine.

After a couple broken tips, and the fact that I now tow the portables with snomos, I decided to try the Otter. It is working good and protect 4 combos real well.

Here are my sort of complaints on it:

-it is not designed to sit flat when standing up. Say, set it handle UP on garage floor, and there isn't little leveling "feet" to keep it from being tippy. I could just put little rubber "feet" on bottom and it would work.

-I have ABU 100's and 101's and you really need to fold the handles down or it just is too darn tight when you close it. Not a big deal, but sort of an extra step.

-The top opening piece is seperate from the handle, and there is nothing to grab on the top piece to lift it - meaning if you have gloves on it isn't made for easily having some friction or other item to just "lift" without grabbing for it. I guess a little bolt or even a little hole drilled in it for finger hole would work.

-The latches are not "supatight" but have not come off/open yet on a trip. But might be nice to have a "lock latch", like just a hole you could put a carabiner through to ensure it would not pop open, for those of us who might tend to be over cautious smile

All in all, I like it, it works, but there sure could be minor refinements made to it to make it much more user friendly.

After a fishing trip of two broken rod tips, I am using 3/4" white pvc pipe to protect the rods inside my cheap soft rod case. I can still pack up to five rods with reels. I used to use the blue rod socks, but they were rough on spring bobbers and the jig hooks got caught in them. Now, no more tangled lines and broken tips.

I just remembered seein' a 28in Stanley plastic toolbox ... Menards or Lowes ... $30, IIRC ... looked a little wider, too ... might be time for me to upgrade. whistle

had some time ... swung by menards ... was gonna pick up that 28in Stanley, but it didn't seem much longer than my Contico ... I measured it ... 26.5in end to end ... meaning, the interior's even a bit less :-/ ... it IS wider ... nice box ... but I left it.

Too bad Contico don't make a 30in box ... that'd be about perfect!

Ed, the case measures 37" long by 12" wide by 7" deep. I could call the guy I picked it up from and see if he knows who the manufacturer is. He deals in the business of overstock and sells the products at a reduced price. I'll let you know what I find out.
