FL18 vs FL-8

Do any of you think that the FL-18 with bottom zoom is much better than what you had with an FL-8? I recently purchased the FL-18 and have only used it 3 times and I don't feel like it is vastly superior and not sure it was worth the money I paid for it. What do you guys think and could I return it even if I wanted to?

I thought it was going to be one of those things where you feel like "how did I ever fish without it"...but I don't think I feel that way. Just curious. Fish on.

I think that the bottom zoom is a very useful tool while fishing walleyes and other fish that are staying close to the bottom of the lake. When you have it zeroed in on the bottom, if you take your eyes off of your vex for a second or two, I think it is easier to notice if a fish has slid in tight to the bottom. the other reason that is really nice is that you have 6 feet of depth in half of the display which enables you to pick out multiple fish easier as well as tell when the fish is actually "all over the lure" instead of possibly being as much as a foot off if you had it in normal. I think it is definetly worth the money but if you decide to swap it out, I would just clean it up good and tell them that your wife bought you the wrong one for xmas. Good luck

I also bought a fl18 last week. My opinion is if you have been useing a fl 8 and read below the bottom (small orange blips in the solid red) all the zoom on the 18 does is make these orange blips green. the low power in shallo weeds is nice.

Not sure what you fish the most? The first few times I had my FL-18 out after selling me FL-8. I felt the same way but since I fish Walleye 90% of the time, I have really come to wonder how I ever did fish without it! If you fish Crappies or other fish that are suspended a lot it may not make as much of a difference to you then. But if you fish bottom feeders! It helps a lot after you learn how to use it. I would give it some more time and try other types of fishing with it. wink

I was wondering this also if it was worth switching to the 18 for walleye /perch fishing but I have used my dads and its nice but the lines are so thick that the sfl feature seems more appealing to me.Even the bird 55 has nice detail.I fish with an fl-8se with dual beam and its comparable to my dads 18.Should fish with it more to really feel it out though.

I upgraded to the fl-18 this year and it has made a big difference when walleye or perch fishing. Anything that hugs the bottom with be easier to "see". It is different for everyone, but for me it helps using the zoom for the bottom.

Keep the 18, I would never go back after using it for a few years.

A really good way to see the difference between the two is to look at them with a camera. It is very intresting to watch the light beams and the camera and see how far off the bottom each unit shows the jig before it shows in the Vex. I did this with mine when I had the FL-8 and when I got the FL-18. The 18 really showed up closer to the bottom when lifting it up. wink

Doubt you could return it. You could always try. I think you would be better off selling it.

As for which is better.. It really depends on your style of fishing. If you mostly fish crappies and gills, then no, the 18 is probably not all that much better. But if you fish a lot of walleye and perch, then yes, The 18 with the bottom zoom is going to help you out a lot!!

I've had the 18 for 6 years and would not trade it for an 8 which I also had. Lake of the Woods that zoom is sweet when you're dealing with belly hugging eyes and saugs. I agree that crappie or sunnies may not as important. With crappies suspending as they do over deep water fishing without the zoom is a plus giving you good seperation to the entire water column. Its nice to have both options. I wouldn't give mine up. smile

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
